Dead Sea, Madaba

4.3
#2 of 8 in Things to do in Madaba
One of the world's more unusual bodies of water, Dead Sea sits at one of the lowest elevations on Earth. Rich in salt and in history, the lake is nearly ten times saltier than any ocean. Feel the peculiar sensation of floating in water some 428 m (1,404 ft) below sea level, just as Queen Cleopatra did in the 1st century BCE. Surrounded by dozens of resorts with both private and public beaches, the sea remains a favorite destination for taking dips in the mineral-rich waters, framed by the Judean desert and mountains. • In view of the various reviews, we hesitated to go considering the price tickets and already knowing the sensation of floating in a bath of kaolin but in fact it is an experience except that he should try at least once in his life.

  • I think if you are on a very short trip to Jordan, visiting Dead Sea is a must. It’s about an hour of drive from Amman where I was on business. Take some swimwear with you and take a swim. The water i...  more »

  • The Dead Sea known in Hebrew as Yam Ha-Melakh (the Sea of Salt) is the lowest point on earth, surrounded by the stunning landscape of the Negev Desert. The shores of the Dead Sea are the lowest point on the surface of the earth, and the saline water of the lake give lead to the name ‘Dead Sea’ because no fish can survive in the salty waters. The other result of the salty water of the Dead Sea is their renowned health and healing properties and the unique feature that one can float naturally in them.
  • Great to float in. Just remember that any scratches, sunburns, or other skin related injuries will be under extreme pain once it touches the water. But if you understand that and get in then it will actually heal your wounds. Very cool place. Look around for naturally forming salt balls.
  • Was a dream since childhood. Was hesitant to get in. Need half an hour to learn the trick of effortlessly moving around, it can't be termed as swimming. Show patience for that. The smell of kerosene has to be tolerated. All wounds in your body will cause pain, but for few moments. Take care not to spill in to eyes or swallow. The stones on the floor are sharp. Take care.
  • Good water, salty, much salt enough to make one float and this place barely supports any life. Interesting for holiday's sneak a ways for two or family.
  • That is a cool place, floating on the water it is virtually impossible to not float. Good for your skin apparently too.
