  • The Ottomans occupied the castle until WWI when much of it was destroyed by shelling from the British Royal Navy. The Turks were ousted during the Arab Revolt 1916-1918.  more »
  • The castle was close because of renovation but we have a good picture through the upper road. Looks for Arab concepts like fun.

  • Good afternoon! One day, when we walked with his son on Aqaba-decided to go for the highest flag in the world. One of the roads leading to the flag through the local Castle, which is often closed. But returning to the hotel we suddenly saw that the door is open and went inside the Castle. Intriguing? We didn't have time to watch much, because the workers it was explained to us that the entrance is closed. From what we saw-Ah was not. The same Castle is in many places, for example on Djerba. Rather, it even forts than castles.

  • The castle is still under renovation. According to some local staff it will be finished... when it will be finished. It has been under renovations for a couple of months now. There were no sign of active work in progress so i would suggest you ask some locals before going there. However tpu can still do the waterfront walk and have a look on the giant flag it's just nearby. This flag has no star, it's "almost" the Jordan flag (flag of the revolution).
  • Historically castle but need more attention
  • It's a mumlok and ottoman castle , small but nice one, now its closed , its under restoration, its will be open in the beginning of April
  • You'll arrive at the entrance of a mini museum where you will buy a ticket for 2 JD. It's small, but has good information. Exiting the museum, you'll head up the street for the entrance to the Castle, dating as far back as 14th C. Though it is currently under construction in honor of the centennial of the Arab Revolt (and because a team did shoddy work of it in the 1960s), you'll still be welcome to walk through the wooden gates and into a different time period. Talk to the men restoring the castle. They will tell you what they've found that day or if National Geographic was there the day before to film a documentary. If you're lucky, you might be able to see some of the bullet shells they've recovered. Definitely read up on the castle before you go as there are no placards inside the castle itself. Interesting to note: the Aqaba Flagpole (that is so big they can probably see it from space) is not the Jordanian flag, but the Arab Revolt flag. It flies over the castle in memory.

Where to stay in Aqaba

Aqaba has a smattering of luxury hotels and a few classy chains, while a range of budget accommodations suitable for diving-oriented vacations cluster along the northern side of the city. Family-oriented mid-range hotels are grouped close to the marina. The resort makes a popular spot for Jordanians and Gulf tourists from October through March. During summer season (June-September), especially on weekends and public holidays, it is advisable to book in advance.
