(240+ reviews on the web)
Geologic Formation Nature / Park
View the unusual and strikingly hued natural formation of Okama Crater, a huge crater lake lying at an elevation of 1,758 m (5,768 ft). Follow a scenic mountain road to one of the nearest peaks--complete with parking lot, shrine, and restaurant--and undertake a short hike to the viewing platform from there. Those with a bit more energy to burn can trek on to the summit of one of the range's highest peaks, 45 minutes from the parking lot. Be sure to bring some sunscreen, sturdy boots, and plenty of water for the excursion. Use our Zao-machi vacation generator to arrange your visit to Okama Crater and other attractions in Zao-machi.

  • One of the most beautiful crater in the world. Also, one of the best drive in Japan. Other than amazing view and drive the weather is really unpredictable. Even when the forecast says it will be sunny...  more »

  • Seeing tour buses on this road is just scary; I expect that the drivers know their business, but still we wouldn't take a bus up (or down) this road for love nor money. Our little rental Subaru did fi...  more »
  • The scenery at the top is absolutely worth it and if a must-see if you're in Yamagata. Visited in Mid-October 2016 and it was an absolute blast. The drive to the summit was bursting with color from the fall leaves and the traffic wasn't bad either. We took the gimmicky 'chairlift' which let us soak in the sights (valley below, mountains in the distance). At the top the scenery was amazing; huge caldera and otherworldly landscapes. Be careful of strong winds at the top - especially if you're wearing a hat.
  • Good landscape but be carefull cos in winter they close the road. So you can't go there
  • I took the 930 bus from Yamagata station, yes it really did take 1h 3mins to get all the way to the top. This is the only bus that seems to go all the way up. The trip was well worth it, the view was stunning, even as the clouds rolled over the lake. In fact this made the whole experience more awesome as the lake slowly disappeared from view under a blanket of white.
  • The view from Mt Katta of the lake in the crater was amazing. Drive is a little long up the mountain but worth it. The whole family loved this one of a kind view.
