Zakimi Castle Ruins, Yomitan-son

4.2
Head uphill to see Zakimi Castle Ruins, part of a World Heritage Site protecting the remnants of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Built by the Chuzan Kingdom in the 15th century as a defense against the rebels of the north, the castle stood as the kingdom defeated its rivals and united the island under the Ryukyu banner. Today, only the stone walls and palisades remain, although their design and structure still capture the imagination. Visit the onsite museum to learn more about the citadel's history, then stroll the grounds and take in the extensive views of the surrounding area. • Visit 12/22 to zakimi, close to the accommodation you want and explore castles (gusuku) haven't done until now, partly because it seemed sunny day and I have been. To explain it's Trade Center and Ming (China) said that the Mainland's Ryukyu culture and thriving in the Muromachi age not felt enough passing still does not know if you look at SHURI Castle and the style and cultural level, battle castle wall buckling strength and precision of. Please think twice. I think with less if you think no matter if mainland personnel and raw stones are much to be? I think the area of the main island of Okinawa, whose wisdom is great. Yomitan ascended to the stone wall, overlooking the scenery is great and the sea will exactly beauty from sea world. Had a good experience.

  • I enjoyed seeing this castle ruin. The journey begins up a flight of stairs, then through a short wooded path, finally leading one to the entry arch. Once inside the inner wall ring, one can climb metal stairs to walk atop the stone wall. The views from all directions are impressive, the lush beauty of Okinawan forests are my favorite of anywhere. Be careful if you walk on top of the wall, the winds can gale at times up there.
  • Great place for kids to run around, beautiful view from up top. So quiet and it does have the information in English too
  • Zakimi Castle is a near perfect example of Ryukyuan Gusuku Castle. As one explores the Castles on Okinawa Zakimi is probably the best castle to start with. You can drive up to and park at either the back gate or just below the main gate. The hill you walk to either gate is relatively gentle compared to some of the other castles on the island. There is no admission fee, and one could have a very thorough walk through of the castle and it's grounds in an hour. There is a small museum and as of January 2018 they are still working to finish the expansion of the Yomitan village museum also located on Zakimi's grounds.
  • For anyone who doesn't mind visiting a world heritage site with what is essentially just walls that have been restored, you would probably enjoy this place. It would most likely be a short visit nonetheless as there really isn't much to see.
  • The site consists of the walls of the castle. It was nice to walk around a surprisingly large complex. Being able to walk around on the walls was an added bonus. There is not much in the way of information to explain about the site. But still worth a look if you're into history
