Meet the red panda at Nogeyama Zoo, the oldest zoo in Yokohama. The most popular attraction here is the petting area, where mice, guinea pigs, snakes, and fantail pigeons can be observed from up close, fed, and touched. A short stroll through this leafy environment uncovers some of the 100 different species that call the zoo their home, including primates, giraffes, bears, and everyone's favorite, the red panda. The zoo was only the second in the world to breed the Andean condor in captivity, and you can still see this majestic creature at the zoo's aviaries. FREE zoo with approximately 1200 animals of about 100 species. Opened in 1951 it was the first zoo in Japan to enjoy success of housing a number of foreign species including panthers, sloth bears and lemurs. Currently, there are no panthers but they do have big "cats" - a lion and a tiger. There aren't any sloth bears at the moment either, but they have other types of bears. The kids enjoyed being so close to the animals and being able to see them up close and personal. They have a great petting area where kids can meet, touch and hold small animals such as mice, guinea pigs and snakes.
For a free zoo, this was surprisingly good value. Great for both kids and adults.
Awesome zoo. It's free and has healthy and well taken care animals. Highlights are Tiger, lion, penguins, kangaroos, giraffe and petting hamsters and mouse
Medium sized ZOO, close to downtown. Admission is free around the year. There is even a lion and a giraffe, among other animals. Petting ZOO with guinea pigs, mice and chicken is very popular among the children.
For it's purpose this place is great. We love that they rescue wild animals from unfortunate situations and give them a home until they can be placed in a better facility, which means the zoo is constantly gaining and losing animals. It's a nice idea and with free admission that makes it a great place to go visit. BUT Beware of the routes that google maps or any map program may send you on to get there if you have a stroller or anyone who has difficulty climbing stairs. The zoo itself is even a bit steep at times so be prepared to hoof it up and down hill a bit while you are there. There is only 1 entrance/exit so you will be going up and down both ways. If you want to go visit there, head out to it from Sakuragicho station (or it's main road). There is an easier path to get up that way and with a little pushing you'll get up that way just fine. The petting zoo is small and limited to guinea pigs, chicks, mice and a few large chickens. Great for kids, but even on rainy days don't be surprised it its busy with small classes of children.
