#1 of 96 in Wildlife in Chubu
Part of a larger national park, Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park features a series of hot springs that attract a large number of Japanese macaques. Especially picturesque when covered in snow, this remote area allows you to observe monkeys as they bathe in the pools of warm water. Get close to the animals and take a few photos, but remember that it's forbidden to touch and feed the wildlife sheltered within park grounds. • It’s roughly a 25-minute walk up the designated trail to see the famous snow monkeys in their natural habitat. That said, it was a particularly warm day in March, which meant that melting ice turned t...  more »
  • 1 1/4 mile walk on an ice covered uphill trail to the park. Fabulous to see these unique creatures and well worth the time involved. These monkeys seem unconcerned about the hoards of visitors. Close ...  more »
  • You might at the Monkey Park nearby is not monkey out in spring and especially here. The staff said, basically you don't like getting wet, so cold not hot sunny days. Here is a personal guess. Stay at the hot springs, there was snow and rain get wet anyway that is my monkey?

  • The walk in the forest to the entrance gate is lovely, but very, very cold and icy footpath. Make sure you wear your warmest long jacket, gloves and good snow boots. Crampons to stick under your shoes are for hire at the beginning of the park, for those who might be prone to slipping and losing their balance on the snow and ice. The path is an easy grading, not to steep, except for a few sets of steps at the end. Everyone adores those monkeys, so it's very worthwhile to visit! There were about 50 monkeys there at one stage, though none of them felt like taking a bath that day. They did sit by the hot spring and warmed themselves from the radiation of the hot water and the steam...
  • Such an amazing place to visit! It's a bit of a walk to the park from the road. Its a good idea to wear appropriate boots if you're walking in the snow. There are monkeys everywhere just chilling in the hot springs, but also just wandering around. We stayed right until closing time, where the operators of the park fed the monkeys with what looked like grains. There are no fences and it's a just like a reserve, so no cruelty there. Amazing photo opportunities!
  • The snow monkey park was a great experience for me, not only because it was my first time seeing snow, but for other reasons too. Just a disclaimer to anyone planning on going there, there is I believe a 1.8 kilometre walk along snow and sometimes slippery ice to get to the snow monkey park from the entrance road, so it may not be suitable for all visitors to Japan. Despite the long trek, a considerably runny nose and very cold fingers (I don't handle the cold well) I was generally very pleased with the day trip. Once I made it to the park where the snow monkeys spend their time, I was very surprised by how bold the monkeys were. You can get right up close to them, maybe about a metre or so away, and they just don't seem to care. They just continue about their daily lives of essentially entertaining tourists. I saw multiple instances of monkeys chasing each other through crowds of people like they weren't even there, which was pretty funny to be honest. Overall, I definitely thought it was worth the walk to see the monkeys, albeit this may have been because I was so fascinated by all of the snow along the way...
  • This park is so big, but the spot where you can see the monkeys is limited enough with spending within an hour. The monkeys are too cute just like babies doing their things without any attention to the human even when we get very close to them. Ofcourse you can not touch them but believe me, you will be so relaxing with the naughty boys, super models, cool gentlemen in this monkey society. The walking trail in the forest to the spot is so fresh and a bit epic. This pic is the most typical scene to have when you go to this park.
  • Quite a trek but worth it to see it once. We did a day trip from Tokyo so it was a long day - Used our JR passes then got the Snow Monkey Pass from the train station that includes the bus rides (or train) plus the park entrance fee. Was a bit of a walk from the bus station to actually getting to see the monkeys but not too far ... slippery and lots of steps so would not recommend bringing very young children or people in wheelchairs. Was great when we finally got to see the monkeys doing their thing. Would come back with first timers but probably not otherwise. Can give the Cafe Enza at the bottom of the hill a miss.
