Wakayama Castle, Wakayama

3.8
Marvel at the varied and interesting history of Wakayama Castle, a landmark central to the town's cultural lineage. Built in 1586 as the castle of a feudal lord, the building was heavily contested during the reconstruction of Japan, changing hands and uses regularly. The castle's current appearance--a chalky white exterior with three stories towering above the center of the city--owes much to renovations during the 17th century. Observe the cityscape below from this mountaintop seat of history and power, admiring the top-down view that so many rulers have cherished throughout the castle's complicated history. • Enticingly hills of Central Wakayama Castle. Home of the Kishu Han was one of the Tokugawa, unhurried style. It is surely that the reconstruction will be current for buildings from the Edo was destroyed in air raids during World War II, but still, the symbol of Wakayama. Stone wall height, there was spectacular.

  • In the West exit of JR Hegeshan Station, take bus number 3 to the park before you get off, that is to reach the gate of Hegeshan City Park. The car is approximately 5 minutes. The park has fewer people, is quiet and feels comfortable. But on the way to the castle, while walking ramps and less ladder, so it is not suitable for the inconvenience of people. The castle showed many ancient objects. The scenery of Hegeshan can be loft in the days of guarding. The castle ticket already contains the museum's ticket, so you can visit the museum after you have a look at the castle.

  • Just to Hegeshan a short day of travel, in order to grasp the time, choose a bit earlier to stroll around. The crowd is not much, just good is the season, red leaves lined, plus the morning sun light, make Hegeshan city more delicate.

  • A serene spot to walk around and enjoy Japanese history. The pond is nice and taking a picture with the local ninja was the most enjoyable
  • No matter what Japan's castle will be awesome and get 5 star ratings. Even though this one doesn't have English descriptions for the museum exhibits inside the castle. Just kidding, it's not important because we can google all the info we need just about anything these days. Get up to the top of the castle and you've got yourself a nice view of Wakayama in the background for your selfies. Admission for adults cost 410 Yen. 200 Yen for middle school aged kids. This castle closes at 5:30pm but last admission is 5pm. I visited here on a weekday late afternoon time and it was not as busy as Himeji Castle or even Osaka Castle. Which could be one of the reasons why you'd want to visit Wakayama Castle. You pretty much have the whole thing to yourself during your visit. There's a park around the castle but because it was getting dark even though I know Japan is safe I decided to head back Osaka. Now that I know where this castle is I'd come back the next time for a more thorough exploring. One last tip, if you have IBS you might want to know that the toilets inside the castle are squat style.
  • Beautify place for relaxing, taking a breathe and learning Japanese old history.
  • Much quieter than more popular castles. Possible due to season(September).
  • Head to the top of the castle for a 360 degree view of the city of Wakayama. Don't forget to go in the historic Ohashi Roka Bridge (don't forget to remove your footwear first). Try dressing up as a warrior in the souvenir shop too!
