Unzen Jigoku (Unzen Hell), Unzen

4.2
Take a walk through the otherworldly Unzen Jigoku (Unzen Hell), an area of intense volcanic activity. Steam and the smell of sulfur spurt out of the rugged landscape, either side of the wooden walkway on which you tread. Though other places nearby use the energy to create pleasant hot pools and spa facilities, here in "jigoku" (hell) the power of nature remains untempered and leaves a lasting impression. Jigoku may seem a strong, overly dramatic word for it these days, but between 1627 and 1632 the place really did represent hell to some, with Christians tortured to death in the hot springs. • You can walk around amid the smell of sulphur. In about 15 minutes. Activities of the Earth feels closer to home. Poached egg and cider sales. A hot foot bath, but so little on pins and needles, feeling good.

  • Look good as hell every went differently. Naming origin of hell is also interesting. Straighten a little even of martyrdom and visited.

  • Stopped at Unzen Hell on the way from Nagasaki to Shimabara. Interesting geysers. Well worth a visit. It's free entry. Eat the eggs! Actually planned to stay at an Unzen ryokan, but unfortunately it didn't fit into our schedule. Definitely will try to stay here next time.
  • If you are visiting Nagasaki, it is well worth to take a side trip to Unzen Hell. It only takes about an hour and a half by car. Cost 500 yen for a full day parking. Many interesting volcanic formations along a well paved walking path, where you can spend couple hours. Many large sized onzen hotels around the area. Be prepare for driving on a curvey mountain road to get there, especially during the winter season.
  • A must in Unzen that feels really mystical to walk thru the steam that sometimes cover the path. Majestic form of terrain adds the beauty of the whole picture. It's more to just beautiful scene as it's a spot that some christian pastors were tortured by dipping into boiling spring water in 1632. It's a monument built for the martyrdome inside the Unzen hell.
  • I loved this village. The steamy vents give it an other worldly feeling. The Lonely Planet tells you there are no restaurants but this is not true. You can find decent stuff to eat without having to eat overpriced (and often unpleasant IMO) Japanese food in the hotels.
  • Unzen hells! You can see the volcanic power! Interesting to walk through, but quite short, and not much else to do in the town. But do try to go to an onsen too, to complete the experience!
