Byodoin, Uji

(4.3/5 based on 950+ reviews on the web)
With a history spanning over a thousand years, Byodoin serves devotees of the Pure Land Buddhism sect. The temple and its garden date back to 998 and feature the famous Phoenix Hall, depicted on the back of Japan's ten-yen coin. Unlike many nearby structures, this hall has never been destroyed, making it one of the only wooden examples of Heian period architecture in existence today. more »
