Byodoin, Uji

4.4
#1 of 30 in Things to do in Uji
With a history spanning over a thousand years, Byodoin serves devotees of the Pure Land Buddhism sect. The temple and its garden date back to 998 and feature the famous Phoenix Hall, depicted on the back of Japan's ten-yen coin. Unlike many nearby structures, this hall has never been destroyed, making it one of the only wooden examples of Heian period architecture in existence today. Put Byodoin into our Uji vacation planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Standard should be 10 yen ball very familiar for the first time went in. It is recommended that originally asked are crowded in the morning and go and visit the byodoin Temple in need get a ticket (fee required), so first go to the reception. Take pictures until the set time, museums and demawarimashita about 1 hour. So cute and surprisingly original goods of equal is recommended.

  • About 40 years ago, went on a school trip to the mistake, I visited NARA line from Kyoto station. Memories faded color 40 years ago had turned really good, was good. It is good I had the hose for the water in the pond or was worried about.

  • Were at a scientific conference in Kyoto, and one day we were transported here from the excursion. The excursion was very extensive, fair, around the complex. So in total, held more than four hours. The guides are all very emotionally and nicely tell, give time to wander and enjoy yourself and wonder all this magnificence. Strikes, as all structures and buildings, temples and other buildings harmoniously fit into the landscape. It seems like any trifle, every detail were tentatively reconciled thousands of times before you were in the place where they are now. Just amazing! Necessarily, if there is an opportunity to visit!

  • This was such a beautiful and serene temple to visit. It definitely became the highlight of my visit to Uji. Admission is ¥600, but entering the Phoenix Hall, the main temple, costs an additional ¥300. This is a 20 minutes tour guided in Japanese, but you can get an English description of everything that the guide says during the standard tour. Included in the admission fee is a small museum showing and expanding on explanations of some of the decorations and details in the main temple's architecture, which I found quite beautiful.
  • Beautiful temple surrounded by a pond. Great for photo taking. Have to pay extra to see the huge Buddha inside the temple, but the craftsmanship is well woth the money. The surrounding landscape is serene and lovely. You can see trees 200 years old there. Make sure you reward yourself with the green tea soft ice-cream right in front of the entrance.
  • Tea House in Byodoin Temple, gyokuro served by the tea master for appreciation. Has a subtle sweet tea as opposed to the usual green tea you drink. It is a nice peaceful walk through Byodoin Temple with views of some historic arts. Worth a visit if you are in the area. Uji is known for its green tea
  • Entrance fee apply Adults ¥600, High School Students ¥400. To be honest after you pay to get in, you walk around temple and you also can visit museum which is pretty nice. But there is additional fee if you want to go inside the temple ! There is every 15 min tour. I am not sure if you can take pictures inside probably not.
  • Well worth the effort. We paid the 600y entry but not the extra to go inside, quite happy outside in grounds. Very nicely set out pretty place.

Where to stay in Uji

The small and historical city of Uji has a modest collection of accommodations, but many of them provide an atmospheric stay. Traditional "ryokan" (guesthouses) represent some of the most authentic and memorable places to stay here, with the most popular ones sitting on the western bank of the river. Elsewhere, a couple of simple hotels sit next to the main train station. The vast majority of visitors to Uji opt to stay in either Kyoto or Nara, with both accessible in under an hour by road and rail.
