Byodoin, Uji

(1,000+ reviews on the web)
Religious Site Tourist Spot
With a history spanning over a thousand years, Byodoin serves devotees of the Pure Land Buddhism sect. The temple and its garden date back to 998 and feature the famous Phoenix Hall, depicted on the back of Japan's ten-yen coin. Unlike many nearby structures, this hall has never been destroyed, making it one of the only wooden examples of Heian period architecture in existence today. • One of the most beautiful and famous temples in Japan, best known for the temple on the back of a 10 yen coin. You may not be able to go inside the Hoo-do when it is crowded because they only let in 5...  more »

  • Entrance fee apply Adults ¥600, High School Students ¥400. To be honest after you pay to get in, you walk around temple and you also can visit museum which is pretty nice. But there is additional fee if you want to go inside the temple ! There is every 15 min tour. I am not sure if you can take pictures inside probably not.
  • Well worth the effort. We paid the 600y entry but not the extra to go inside, quite happy outside in grounds. Very nicely set out pretty place.
  • Definitely worth the visit if you're in Uji. Even during the high season, this temple is a lot more serene than others in Kyoto. Put aside some time for the fancy museum they have inside. They also have a small wisteria garden that is usually in bloom right after the sakura season (end of April).
  • This random stop turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. We got lucky because it wasn't too crowded. The landscaping is beautiful and it was very peaceful.
  • An iconic building for sure, the grounds are well kept and the museum is attached. You do pay extra to go inside the building.
