Tottori

Trip Planner Asia  /  Japan  /  Chugoku  /  Tottori Prefecture  /  Tottori
(3.5/5 based on 1,800+ reviews for top 30 attractions)
Things to do: nature, museums, historic sites
A highlight of the west of the country, Tottori sits along the coast of the Sea of Japan. The city has been a powerful entity since the early feudal era, with remains of ancient castles, restored temples, and museums across town and the surrounding landscape. What really steals the show during visits to Tottori, however, remains the sand dunes. The vast area of volcanic ash dunes to the north of the city has an impressive, dramatic look, with the wind blowing ash into banks and valleys, and helping teams of kite-flyers and hang-gliders on their way. When using our Japan itinerary planner, you're building your holiday based on your own interests, visitor reviews, and the informed opinions of our well-traveled writers.

Where to stay

Tottori, despite its obvious charms and attractions, has yet to really catch on when it comes to international tourism. In fact, the accommodations available in the city proper highlight its domestic status: it's an industrial city where businesses have set up offices close to the center. As such, the accommodations of Tottori sit close to the main train station, and primarily consist of business-style hotels, with simple rooms, a pool, and a restaurant. A couple more atmospheric and unusual options can be found, including traditional guesthouses, both in the center and to the north, next to the dunes.
