Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters, Tomigusuku
(4.5/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Visitors to Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters will find many sad, poignant reminders of the terrible loss of life that took place here in Okinawa, and of the painful legacy of war. The naval base was established in 1944 using pickaxes and hoes, and was 450 m (1,476.3 ft) in length. In the post-war years, the site was left untouched until it was re-opened in 1970, after being renovated. At that time, the remains of around 2,400 people were recovered. Traverse the tunnels observing relics and artifacts, including a telegram from the forces' final commander Rear Admiral Minoru Ota, sent just days before he and 175 of his men committed "seppuku," a form of ritual suicide. Stories like this echo throughout the tight corridors, officer's rooms, code rooms, and staff room. • Okinawa student was visiting times every year, but this YUI trip free time because it had never visited 1 times the Ministry of rail and bus, came with one. Land say the military is as you'd expect, not a car for high ground as long as climbs up to the entrance of the Hill about 5 minutes. First learn about the battle of Okinawa in the library's entrance, then to the bunker. I thought it was a valuable place where touches such as pickaxes dug a trench at the time watched the many ruins in the war so far, but the scar remains sharper or the pieces of the grenade pierced the feel right at the time of.

  • Rooms in front of the entrance of the library like pieces of precious photos, and a weapon and clarity and easy explanations, so I can. Outside the monument. It is also pleasant Observatory, weather permitting. Are still inside, and so very realistic image. Or left on the wall is actually died here is misery at that time is understood well.

  • Given in there lights are now in place here because the Navy during the battle of Okinawa, had been fighting the dark at that time because it was fighting the dark feelings. Also room Navy commander committed suicide are left intact. Might want to study once they visit.
