Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters, Tomigusuku

(4.5/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Visitors to Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters will find many sad, poignant reminders of the terrible loss of life that took place here in Okinawa, and of the painful legacy of war. The naval base was established in 1944 using pickaxes and hoes, and was 450 m (1,476.3 ft) in length. In the post-war years, the site was left untouched until it was re-opened in 1970, after being renovated. At that time, the remains of around 2,400 people were recovered. Traverse the tunnels observing relics and artifacts, including a telegram from the forces' final commander Rear Admiral Minoru Ota, sent just days before he and 175 of his men committed "seppuku," a form of ritual suicide. Stories like this echo throughout the tight corridors, officer's rooms, code rooms, and staff room. • So do not go on a school trip to Okinawa, visited with family as part of a peace on this occasion. I feel indescribable atmosphere in trench I think museums first elementary school grades are a little difficult, but firmly. Exploded grenades in particular, vestiges, such as quite impressive. Peace Memorial Park and is also different from reality, is a place where you can feel.

  • The bunker was a bit short but the corridor was wider than thought. And it was creepy to see the sucidal spot with holes on the wall.
  • Do you know Lieutenant OTA? In inland Japan naval servicemen, most liked by the Okinawan people and paid tribute to people. Digging the Township during the U.S. slaughter to repeat in the Okinawa landing soldiers not only people but end of the Pacific war, there was a directive investment took place. OTA Lt. would not damage to various things on the people of Okinawa, and acted. It took the action against the leaders of Japan army losing, even knowing does not raise the white flag. Military credit, but was also a heartbreaking story.
