Specialty Museum Museum
Awa Odori Kaikan offers visitors the opportunity to learn about and spectate on an attractive, traditional Japanese Bon dance. Every year during August, the country takes part in its largest dance festival, attracting more than 1.3 million revelers annually, resulting in the culmination of over 400 years of history. Visitors to this museum can absorb the history of the dance and watch vibrant performances all year round. Across the building's five floors, you'll also have the chance to shop for local produce, peruse a specialist library, and even take the ropeway from the fifth floor to the summit of Mt. Bizen. From here, visitors can take in panoramic views of the Tokushima plains. Make Awa Odori Kaikan part of your personalized Tokushima itinerary using our Tokushima family vacation planner.

Where to stay in Tokushima

Tokushima provides its guests with a more than ample selection of places to stay, from friendly budget hostels to upmarket, Western-style high-rise establishments. Hotels concentrate around the capital's central park and Shinmachi River tributaries, popular due to the location's convenient proximity to all major Tokushima attractions and good rail transport links. If you're looking to lay your head in a more traditional setting, explore a handful of Japanese ryokans a few blocks south of the park. When visiting in August, book early to avoid disappointment due to the large volume of visitors to Tokushima's dance festival.

  • Cultural dance performance for about 40 minutes, quite entertaining and fun! Souvenirs and local products aplenty in the shops too.
  • Ropeway with cultural dance performance nice to try
  • Large gifts selection. Unfortunately more for shopping than information
  • It was an amazing cultural experience to see the Awa-Odori Japanese dance group, with the cutest little kids, and also teens, young ladies and old gentlemen all dancing in unique styles along with live traditional music. Foreign visitors are encouraged to jump up and have a quick workshop on how to do the dance, and then all the dancers join in and everyone from the crowd is invited to join, followed by a final performance.
  • If you're in Tokushima, and you missed out on the Awa Odori Festival, you can always see some Awa dancing here! You get to see and learn different varieties of awa dancing, and at the end you get the chance to learn some basic moves, while everyone dances together in a circle. Great for those looking for unique Japanese experiences, is reasonably priced, and can be combined for discounts with the ropeway and/or museum.
