Shirakami Sanchi, Tohoku

#24 of 188 in Nature in Tohoku
Shirakami-Sanchi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in northern Honshu, Japan. This mountainous, unspoiled expanse of virgin forest straddles both Akita and Aomori Prefectures. Of the entire 1,300 km², a tract covering 169.7 km² was included in the list of World Heritage Sites in 1993. Siebold's beech trees make up a large portion of the forest.SummaryThe Shirakami-Sanchi was one of the first sites entered on the World Heritage List in Japan, along with Yakushima, Himeji Castle, and Buddhist Monuments in the Hōryū-ji Area in 1993. The Shirakami-Sanchi is usually said to contain large areas of forest not covered by the World Heritage listing. However the level of preservation in these areas is not as high as in the central listed area. The World Heritage Site area has never been opened to human activity or trails other than mountain climbers' paths, and is planned to be protected in this state. Permission is needed from Forest Management to enter the heart of the Shirakami-Sanchi. Fishing requires permission from both the Fishing Cooperative and Forest Management.HighlightsPrimeval beech forestThe beech tree is usually unsuitable for cultivation of the Shiitake mushroom. Therefore, beech forests have never been disturbed by Shiitake farmers and remain in a state of preservation much greater than that of surrounding forests. Apart from beech trees, Katsura, Kalopanax, Japanese Hop-hornbeam and other species of tall deciduous trees are found in the forest.

  • Rent a car in Noshiro, climb up to 1 hour and 40 minutes. From there reach the Summit in about 50 minutes. Summit opens the North slightly in front and to the mountains of Fagus crenata forests in the core area. And low mountains of shirakami mountains about 1,000 m below I'm usually doing hill climbing in the Kanto area is reforested and the maintained trails also are, whatever is not visible. Get real and do what no natural feel.

  • Was watching a travel brochure, so you want to go. Forests to vast virgin forest seen from the mountain, the River, great views. I'd better have time so you can walk from the visitor center is the long walks and went out. Intact down to the 12 Lake the trail is closed when I went, but the detour. I think better visited on separate dates.

  • I had only half-time in 30 minutes from hirosaki city could go, flip through the beech forest. Beech forest air is good, but the stream is clean and easy to go near the water, watching the flow of fun. Become a world natural heritage site, are equipped with various pedestrian entrance is puzzling. During the summer, camp sites etc stayed. In half a day I jammed mountain roads might have been impossible.
