Lake Towada, Tohoku

#18 of 248 in Nature in Tohoku
Look over a vast vista of water at Lake Towada. At 327 m (1,073 ft) and with a surface area of 61.1 sq km (23.5 sq mi), it's the largest on the island, occupying the caldera of a currently active volcano. During the fall (late September through October), observe the trees on the crater rim turn an array of rusty tones. Enjoy a trip on the water with sightseeing tours sailing out across the lake, or take in the lakeside views from multiple angles at four observational platforms dotted around the water's edge.
