Perhaps the island's best-known hot spring resort, Noboribetsu has a long history of tourism. The quality of the water from the hot spring here has long been touted, with a number of the "ryokan" (traditional Japanese guesthouses) in town open for generations. Many of the ryokan have onsite bathhouses, known in Japan as "onsen," which use the water from the springs in a range of spa treatments. A valley to the north of the town center gives another perspective on geothermal phenomena during visits to Noboribetsu, with the steaming land of red and orange rocks often compared to hell. Plan the details of your Noboribetsu holiday and any onward adventuring with our easy-to-use Japan trip itinerary planning tool.
