Lake Kussharo, Teshikaga-cho
(4/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Go fishing, hiking, kayaking, and cycling around Lake Kussharo, Japan's largest caldera lake that freezes over completely in the winter. Soak away your worries in an outdoor hot spring bath and walk over hot sands along the lakeshore. You can also visit Wakoto Peninsula if you wish to see active sulfurous vents or enjoy a hike through the forest. Acidic water of the lake supports only a few species here, such as a rare form of cicada and rainbow trout. Put Lake Kussharo on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Teshikaga-cho trip itinerary builder.
