Lake Kussharo, Teshikaga-cho

4.0
#3 of 28 in Things to do in Teshikaga-cho
Waterfall Nature / Park
Go fishing, hiking, kayaking, and cycling around Lake Kussharo, Japan's largest caldera lake that freezes over completely in the winter. Soak away your worries in an outdoor hot spring bath and walk over hot sands along the lakeshore. You can also visit Wakoto Peninsula if you wish to see active sulfurous vents or enjoy a hike through the forest. Acidic water of the lake supports only a few species here, such as a rare form of cicada and rainbow trout. Put Lake Kussharo on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Teshikaga-cho trip itinerary builder.

Where to stay in Teshikaga-cho

The town of Teshikaga-cho itself has a good array of hotels, traditional ryokan, and a couple of more budget-friendly hostels. The more luxurious among them have onsite onsens and restaurants, and with proximity to the main train line, the area offers convenience for travelers just arriving or soon to leave. But the surrounding rural spots have just as much in terms of accommodations, particularly close to the lakes, with clusters of ryokans, some campgrounds, and luxury resorts.
