Lake Kussharo, Teshikaga-cho

Go fishing, hiking, kayaking, and cycling around Lake Kussharo, Japan's largest caldera lake that freezes over completely in the winter. Soak away your worries in an outdoor hot spring bath and walk over hot sands along the lakeshore. You can also visit Wakoto Peninsula if you wish to see active sulfurous vents or enjoy a hike through the forest. Acidic water of the lake supports only a few species here, such as a rare form of cicada and rainbow trout. • Very nice stop by Lake covered of snow except the edges where the water is warm. The swans are many and although qq Chinese tourists there simply to move away a little to be quiet and majestic landscapes.

  • Beautiful, and one of the few places you can swim around here (at Sunayu beach).
  • NICE place
  • Swan
  • This Lake is located in Akan National Park and is the largest, you can go boating and swimming. After dropping the luggage in our accommodation, we headed on foot towards a thermal source of free access that is located at the Lake and we bathed in a kind of natural pool with water up to 42 degrees, which directly overlooks the lag o and out of a large community of white swans. There are small changing room where you can leave your clothes and wear the costume (unlike the other onsen where you go completely naked) and the beneficial water temperature makes you forget the cold outside!

Where to stay in Teshikaga-cho

The town of Teshikaga-cho itself has a good array of hotels, traditional ryokan, and a couple of more budget-friendly hostels. The more luxurious among them have onsite onsens and restaurants, and with proximity to the main train line, the area offers convenience for travelers just arriving or soon to leave. But the surrounding rural spots have just as much in terms of accommodations, particularly close to the lakes, with clusters of ryokans, some campgrounds, and luxury resorts.
