Shinhotaka Ropeway, Takayama
(4.3/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
On the hillside of Japan's third-tallest mountain, Shinhotaka Ropeway lets you observe remarkable natural scenery from a double-decker gondola. Opened in 1970, the ropeway heads up mighty Mount Hotaka to an altitude of 2,156 m (7,073 ft) above sea level. As you reach the chilly observation deck at the top, you can take in a spectacular panoramic view of the Northern Japan Alps. Admire the natural scenery of the season, whether lush green, golden yellow, or blindingly white. Because of the altitude, always bring something warm to wear. Work out when and for how long to visit Shinhotaka Ropeway and other Takayama attractions using our handy Takayama itinerary builder.

  • This is the highest place to visit when you can't go to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route (黑山立部)or Kamikōchi (上高地)due to closure as a result of snow. It is the best place to still 'climb' the mountain ...  more »
  • The view while on the Ropeway is amazing. There's nothing much to do at the observatory deck... but if you prepare to trek a little, it's worth it. It's absolutely quiet and peaceful on the trek paths...  more »

  • There a lot of nice views at the top of the rope way. Can get crowded on the ropeway making it a bit difficult to look outside.
  • Mostly my fault, but if you go on a rainy day be prepared for no view and a pricey bus ride. There's some great hiking though, and the fall colours are nice!
  • Cool old ropeway with nice views and a different world at the top. Go if in tge area and want to get some altitude awareness.
  • Cable cars are great!!! Do plan ahead, since there may be a lot of tourist group queueing!! During February, the top level are around -10s degrees celcius...
  • Nice views of the surrounding mountains. Not very touristy during my visit. Easily accessible by car from the takayama and okuhida
