Higashiyama Walking Course provides a pleasant stroll through the city's various historic and natural sites. Over 3.5 km (2.2 mi), you'll be exposed to the temples and shrines of the traditional town of Takayama, the houses and back streets of the rural suburbs, and the forested pathway leading to the hilltop site of Takayama Castle. The forested part of the trail affords opportunities to observe wild life, so consider bringing along a pair of binoculars, and look out for the Japanese serow, which frequents the area around the castle remains.   • This is a poorly sign posted walking course, you are basically walking through cemeteries with the occasional temple. Yes it does have sign posts, but it’s not clear where the pathway is.  more »
  • Takes you through a really gorgeous part of town. The signage was good but we lost track of where we were supposed to go multiple times. 100% would recommend if you're in Takayama for a day or two.  more »
  • Must do. Gives a real feel for old Japan, is a nice, not difficult walk and you will see a lot of shrines and temples (too many?). Be prepared to go off track a little bit.  more »
