Where to stay in Takayama

Look along the banks of the river running north-south through Takayama for arguably the town's best accommodations. Traditional ryokan (guesthouses) with onsite onsen (traditional Japanese spas) occupy scenic positions across this central area, displaying fine carpentry skills of the locals and the distinctive architectural style they developed over the years. West of this area, you'll find a number of basic ryokan, with a decent selection of side-street hostels and standard hotels around the train station.

  • A must to go to the morning market in this quiet little town! It is situated after the bridge and besides a very beautiful rivers with some rapids and even big pretty fishes swimming inside the crystal clear waters! Many local small stalls selling home grown veggies and some selling flowers and hand made accessories and even little snacks stall which are piping hot! Don't miss the coffee stall run by a local young man who speaks good English and very friendly and above all made very good coffee and can sit comfortably with chairs provided by him! The beautiful sound of the rushing waters to the rocks at the big rivers form a natural music and very soothing and refreshing while drinking the hot coffee and eating the snacks and enjoy the fresh morning airs and looking at the locals walking around! Unforgettable nice experience of this simple morning market in this lovely little town!
  • Nice for a stroll along the river. Markets itself are quite small but interesting enough to fill up 15 minutes or so!
  • Taking a nice stroll down the market, you will find all kind the souvenior, pastry and titbits! Simply love the feeling
  • Lots of interesting stalls.hand made goods and crafts. Yummy things to eat
  • True it was cold and rainy, maybe that was reason why this wasn't so entertaining. Just a few stalls were there. The snowy view of the river made it fun to walk there any way. And look at those Japanese Koi fish, effortless swimming together in the strong current.
