Haruna Shrine, Takasaki

Step back into the distant past and visit the ancient Haruna Shrine, built in the sixth century. Sitting about halfway up Mt. Hurana, one of the three mountains of Jomo, the shrine is dedicated to the gods of fire, water, and agriculture. Its main gateway slowly reveals itself as you make your way up hill, gaining an ever-expanding view over the horizon. The gate's east-west orientation results in the sun providing an amazing effect by either shining through it from behind, or by illuminating the structure’s face. Follow paved and dirt paths throughout the shrine to come across various cultural and religious icons.
