Ritsurin Garden, Takamatsu

Categories: Nature & Parks
Inspirock Rating:
4.6/5 based on 800+ reviews on the web
Built during the nation's feudal period, Ritsurin Garden remains one of the most popular green spaces in the region. More than a century of work went into these lush gardens from the 1640s onwards, and you'll find that the builders intentionally used the surrounding hills to frame and accent their artificial ponds. Explore the garden's footpaths, passing under canopies of trees and over arched wooden bridges. After wandering, kick back in the park's traditional teahouse, which dates to the 17th century and treats visitors to thick shade, comfort, and refreshments with a view of the pond. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Takamatsu holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Ritsurin Garden and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • One of the best gardens in Japan. I've seen the top 3 gardens (koraku-en, kenroku-en and kairaku-en) and this is every bit as good as they are!
  • Strikingly beautiful traditional daimyo garden originally established in the early 17th century - place of irresistible charm, one would just feel like getting lost there. My personal top spot in Kagawa & Shikoku.
  • Really good place to walk. But entrence fee is little bit expensive 410yen.
  • Beautiful all year round. Different sights for different seasons. Make sure to check out one of the light up festivals if you can, held in the spring and fall. A very relaxing place to hang out with some friends or just strolling through. It might take about two hours time to comb through most of the main paths.
  • Ritsurin Gyoen, given the highest sightseeing rating of three stars, by the Michelin Green Guide Japan in 2009, is a beautiful landscaped garden in Takamatsu City. This 75-hectare park has notable features like six ponds, thirteen hills, waterfall, a bamboo forest, a tea house, and numerous types of trees like plum, cherry, and pine trees. The garden with Mt Shiun as its backdrop, is one of the most beautiful in Japan.
