Ritsurin Garden, Takamatsu

4.5
#1 of 304 in Parks in Shikoku
Built during the nation's feudal period, Ritsurin Garden remains one of the most popular green spaces in the region. More than a century of work went into these lush gardens from the 1640s onwards, and you'll find that the builders intentionally used the surrounding hills to frame and accent their artificial ponds. Explore the garden's footpaths, passing under canopies of trees and over arched wooden bridges. After wandering, kick back in the park's traditional teahouse, which dates to the 17th century and treats visitors to thick shade, comfort, and refreshments with a view of the pond. • I got an immigration seal on my udon passport. Discounts available. It corresponded to electronic money, and Suica was able to be used. A very large park. Free guides can also be asked. It took an hour and a half without a guide. You can see the occasional flowers and autumn leaves. Looking at the lotus pond, there was a person who said lotus root field and laughed, but because it sold Umeboshi of Umebayashi at the exit for 100 yen, lotus root might be? We had matcha at Kikugetsute. There are 250 shutters, and it seems to open and close every day. It's interesting to turn the corner around. There is a tea house, too, and the view is splendid. It is wonderful even if it sees from the hill to the opposite. You can also hear the sound of the waterfall.

  • It is a splendid park with a long history. The pine trees have been maintained with human hands for a long time, and it is a sight to see. The scenery of the garden which uses the scenery of the mountain is splendid, and it is worth visiting. I was with a small child, but I enjoyed playing on the grass.

  • I think if one is to visit Takamatsu, this is a place where they must include in their agenda, and please make sure you allocate at least 0,5day here, as the garden is very big, and you need to spend ...  more »

  • In Ritsurin, Takamatsu has one of the most beautiful Japanese style gardens in the country. It's not huge, but compact in a good way. There are so many vantage points and angles that make for gorgeous photographs. That's not to understate its beauty. Any season and any weather is a good time to visit. The photo taken for this review was during a late summer rain. I highly recommend fall, but you can never go wrong with spring. There are small buildings that look over the pond, and I've had a couple very lovely breakfasts there. Call ahead to reserve a spot. You can also take part in a tea ceremony towards the central area.
  • What a great garden! This garden is must-go place in Japan. So huge that anyone couldn’t possibly walk around every spots. One of the most amazing thing is there are many hundred years old pine trees. They have been trimmed and nurished by the hands of masters who are specially trained for pine trees. I didn’t know that there are special people who treat only pine trees. They must be the special pine tree doctors. It’s well known that how much Japanese love pine trees and take care of them with love. You’ll see those magnificent shape of pine trees here in the garden. It could take a whole day to look around this place.
  • A lovely garden with truly interesting historical significance. It took me about an hour and 15 minutes to enjoy the garden. It was uncrowded on a Monday morning in November.
  • Exquisite and traditional Japanese garden. Definitely a place to visit if you happen to be in the area. ----- # Access is mostly very easy for all abilities, and difficult passages are well indicated. # A boat ride with commentaries (in Japanese or English) of one of the ponds is available for an additional fee. # Eating in the garden is allowed. # The parking is spacious and reasonably priced.
  • Even in the Summer without much blooming Flora the care that goes into the garden was evident and showed. Extremely clean! With a barrier between the city making you forget the urban landscape while visiting.
