Bitchu Matsuyama Castle, Takahashi

4.5
Look through the mists of time at Bitchu Matsuyama Castle. Perched high on a steep mountain, this is the oldest and highest surviving castle in the country, and one of only 12 mountain-top fortifications to have survived the post-feudal age. Consider a morning visit, when the castle seems to sit magically upon an ocean of clouds that stretch across the valley. You'll need to hike about 20 minutes from the end of the road to the top, or about an hour from the station, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring along plenty of water. • Not only because you need to walk up to the Castle. The means like bus or taxi (if you have limited time available) are available at the station but reaching a parking lot where the trail. Peduline or sneakers! then a walk to "climb". Very cute, little one, perched on top of the Hill.

  • Bitchū-Takahashi station has been using share-ride taxis. Meeting place is station tourist office in the reservation one day in advance. Into the library as lead out of the gate quickly and souvenir stores are equipped. And Starbucks, bookstore and toilet on the same floor, until the set time can be adjusted. Bellows pass depending on the taxi way, about 10 minutes, and I was also guided as Samurai and theyre. It can also off home along the way. Cheap 500 yen per person one way. As the stone was used in the opening of "Sanada-Maru" and entering the Castle, and tea-serving machines, preparing green tea. The warm tea because it was freezing cold where you will find plenty of blankets. I think this time was only open for viewing in a matter of hours, but next visited the Observatory early in the morning, once I saw a figure floating in the clouds.

  • A bit of a hike up the hill but well worth the effort. Took a taxi from Takahashi Station. Costs about 1000-1300 yen each way.  more »

  • Cute, small and unfortunately one of the victims of the Meiji Restoration and hence, a newly rebuilt castle. If you don't read Japanese there's little information to glean as no information is in English.
  • Wonderful piece of history on top of a mountain. Castle has been restored to super condition. No English tour material, but castle entry is very affordable.
  • Compared to other castles (e.g. Okayama, which is nearby) this is smaller and less impressive as a building structure, but it was a much more fun day out than visiting others. It's an enjoyable hike from the bus stop off, with beautiful views. Much more serene than most tourist attractions. One wonders how on earth they managed to get all the materials for the castle transported up the mountains back in the day...
  • Scenic views, but very little English information. A little hard to get to unless you take a taxi or a bus tour.
  • Beautiful, small castle with gorgeous views overlooking the city. Definitely on the list to visit if you're interested in original castles, as there are not many left. Also, probably due to the remote location, it's not very crowded and the hike up is steep. There are buses running that you can take. Cheap 300¥ admission.
