Bitchu Matsuyama Castle, Takahashi

#1 of 19 in Things to do in Takahashi
Castle Historic Site
Look through the mists of time at Bitchu Matsuyama Castle. Perched high on a steep mountain, this is the oldest and highest surviving castle in the country, and one of only 12 mountain-top fortifications to have survived the post-feudal age. Consider a morning visit, when the castle seems to sit magically upon an ocean of clouds that stretch across the valley. You'll need to hike about 20 minutes from the end of the road to the top, or about an hour from the station, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring along plenty of water. Our Takahashi trip builder makes visiting Bitchu Matsuyama Castle and other Takahashi attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • I am glad we made the effort to get to this castle. It was a hike but for only 700 m. The path is wide and quite rough, not too slippery. There is a water fountain, tap and toilet just below the castl...  more »
  • Visit on a weekday afternoon. Says it has rushed a little bit and gave us advice is in charge. Kindly Buri tore up Castle watching coming down and I would recommend prepared maps to the next destination, waiting for me. Touch of kindness in the tourist, I was so happy. Castle is indeed climb stairs and a steep slope can be convinced is the highest in Japan. Come take the wand is just off the shuttle. Staff from after the rain, many customers and beautiful.

  • From 8 until the walls than a hard trail (hiking trails). Guide who seemed has encouraged to bring a cane. At major gate on the North wall, and stone was used in the opening image of Sanada-Maru, still cool. Even amateur photo looks like. And climbed the stairs, coming up two yashina is finally before the Castle Square. Because everyone here to break was like climbing tower. Castle Tower itself is smaller in size, including exhibits and attractions is not there, saying it (excuse me, personal thoughts is) but feels the impermanence of all things and to repair Samurai warlords, as well as ruins and Castle turned into the form so far to me to comprehend. I went to the Observatory cloud clouds not castles look smaller, since only time cloud otherwise here is the I have to go.

  • Beautiful, small castle with gorgeous views overlooking the city. Definitely on the list to visit if you're interested in original castles, as there are not many left. Also, probably due to the remote location, it's not very crowded and the hike up is steep. There are buses running that you can take. Cheap 300¥ admission.
  • Lovely Japanese castle on top of a mountain. Great views around the area. I took the hiking trail which was a bit of a walk from the train station, but bus service is available.
  • Small, but adorable castle at the top of a mountain. You can take a bus about 4/5 of the way to the top, but it's a hike from there. Beware the steep steps within the castle.
  • Small mountain top castle with a great view. It's a bit of effort to get up to it but i'd recommend it as the castle itself has been restored beautifully and the views across the country side are great.
  • It's a very small castle (feels more like a house on the inside) but it's also Japan's oldest, and is located on top of a forested mountain rather than the middle of a city.
