Canyon Garden
Towering walls of basalt accented by several waterfalls awe visitors at Takachiho Gorge, a chasm formed by the waters of the Gokase River. At more than 120,000 years old, the gorge winds its way through the dense forests carpeting the surrounding landscape. You can make use of the 1 km (0.6 mi) paved walking trail that tracks the edge of the canyon, offering views down to the river below and passing several historic shrines along the way. Alternatively, rent a rowboat to explore from atop the water. Enclosed by imposing cliffs that reach as high as 100 m (328 ft) in places, you'll pass by streaming cascades like the Manai Waterfall, which drops from a height of 17 m (56 ft). Where to stay in Takachiho-cho

Where the mountain roads all convene at Honmachi, the main accommodations of Takachiho-cho can be found. As with other important locations in Japanese mythology and spirituality, Takachiho-cho possesses a good mix of simple guesthouses for pilgrims and backpackers, as well as some upmarket options, including luxury hotels and traditional guesthouses with limited numbers of rooms and quintessentially Japanese decorations throughout. Follow each of the main roads out of town, and you'll find similar options in more isolated locations.

  • Beautiful place! Quite far but we'll worth it on a sunny day. No drone flying allowed anymore :( A must see :)
  • Spectacular gorge with a nice path to follow. Pity about the boats - a tourist trap that creates a din in an otherwise beautiful and peaceful place of nature.
  • I recommend renting a boat and enjoying the view from below.
  • Stunning view! Great to walk around many activities todo here. A must!!
  • Breathtaking! Beautiful! Worth the time spent
