Amano Iwato Shrine, Takachiho-cho

4.4
#2 of 6 in Historic Sites in Nishiusuki-gun
Dedicated to the sun goddess, Amano Iwato Shrine was built near the cave where she was believed to have hidden from her pursuers, creating a blackout in the world. Some 10 km (6 mi) from downtown Takachino, the shrine sits on the Iwato River. Believed to have originated in the ninth century, the shrine marks the starting point for a hike to the cave of the sun goddess, whose legend presumably came about thanks to a solar eclipse. After you perform a cleansing ritual, you may proceed to the cave. You can take a guided tour with one of the priests accompanying you, but you won't be allowed to take photos. Sunday was day application wait so much, could participate. This is a guided tour is free in your mind to dedicate some system. Parking-shrine-guided tours are almost flat, so people with small children, the elderly are available please feel free to.

  • Place the base in Miyazaki city, reach Takachiho area on a day trip by rental car, stopped by the first. It is a time-honored Amaterasu is enshrined shrine. Is severe or your very natual felt. Seems similar to the Ise Jingu Shrine somewhere I feel like even the atmosphere. Walking approach to making because the dogs were, put the dog on the approach, I worship at the shrine. It was very calm place.

  • Meh! I know the great importance Japanese people place in this shrine, but it isn't that different from any Shinto shrine I've been to.
  • My favorite shrine to visit!
  • This is still one of my favorite shrines to visit!
  • The cave of Sun God hide has filled with solemn atmosphere.
  • Nothing too special I think.

Where to stay in Takachiho-cho

Where the mountain roads all convene at Honmachi, the main accommodations of Takachiho-cho can be found. As with other important locations in Japanese mythology and spirituality, Takachiho-cho possesses a good mix of simple guesthouses for pilgrims and backpackers, as well as some upmarket options, including luxury hotels and traditional guesthouses with limited numbers of rooms and quintessentially Japanese decorations throughout. Follow each of the main roads out of town, and you'll find similar options in more isolated locations.
