Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Taito

3.9
#14 of 364 in Museums in Tokyo
Admire an array of art exhibits at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, a cultural institution located within a wider public park. Originally opened in 1926, the facility underwent major changes in 1975 and 2010, creating a contemporary space that appeals inside and out. The six galleries host exhibits on a range of international art scenes and artists; each space serves only for temporary shows, as the museum does not have a permanent collection. Head back into the European Renaissance, get to know contemporary Japanese artists, or admire folk art from across the globe at this ever-changing venue. Check the website to see what's on currently. • This is one of my favorite museums in Tokyo. They always have special exhibition from time to time. We just finished visiting the Vincent Van Gogh (Jan2018), you can see the museum had put in a lot of effort and the painting collection is from all over the world. They provide coin lockers (100yen each access) and water fountain. There are also 2 restaurants within the building. Price is reasonable. Don't forget to visit the merchandise shop, they have some nice goodies there!
  • Truly enjoyed the Van Gogh special exhibit there. People lined up outside the closing gate before 9:30 am. The special exhibit has superb selections curated from various art institutes and private collectors around the world. However, the special exhibit is on three different levels connected by one-way escalator. Therefore, I cannot go back to see the art works displayed on previous level I just visited.
  • Amazing exhibition of Van Gogh and Japan. Would've liked to see more exhibitions at the museum. We were there during the Christmas and new year holidays so perhaps fewer exhibitions were available then.
  • A nice museum with interesting exhibitions. As with all popular places in Japan arrive before they open to avoid long waiting times. There are also free sections displaying selected amateur art and students of well known art teachers.
  • The building is absolutely stunning. Timeless architecture. Went to the van gogh exhibition which I thought was very expensive, poorly curated, artworks were bunched and spaced poorly, so everyone had to queue awkwardly to view everything. The English explanations were not very thorough. Overall was very disappointed with the van gogh exhibition. Our ticket did include free entry into the Realism exhibition which was excellent and highly recommended
