Sumida

3.4
Observation Decks · History Museums · Shopping Malls
Sumida, a ward northeast of Tokyo's center, features many pre-World War II buildings and, in snatches, maintains the atmosphere and look of a small town. Where once it huddled around the river, today it reaches for the sky, with some of the city's tallest and most famous skyscrapers located here. Even so, the neighborhood--long associated with sumo wrestling--has some well-established businesses and buildings, including restaurants, temples, and cultural institutions that retain the atmosphere of days gone by. If you keep your eyes at street level during your visit to Sumida, you'll be taken back to the past. Look up, and you're in the future. In the build up to your vacation in Sumida, plan trip itinerary minutiae using the visitor reviews, staff write-ups, and custom search fields on our Japan trip itinerary planning app.

Where to stay in Sumida

While Sumida has certainly outgrown its small town status above ground, on street level the narrow, knotted roads and pathways house pre-World War II buildings, mainly acting as stores, homes, offices, and restaurants. As such, most visitors choose to stay on the west bank of the Sumida River in Taito, and those who don't need Sumida right on their doorstep choose other districts throughout the metropolis. You'll find a couple of hotels close to the Skytree, but nearby districts such as Taito offer a much larger choice of hotels, guesthouses, and hostels.
