Where to stay in Tokyo

Tokyo abounds with excellent places to stay, from luxury affairs to humble budget-friendly lodgings. Its glittering skyscrapers house numerous international four- and five-star hotels, both in the populous cultural hotspots of Shinjuku and in the business centers of Akasaka and Shinbashi. Meanwhile, hostels catering to the shoestring traveler lie scattered throughout the city. For a memorable, distinctly Japanese experience, seek out a ryokan, a traditional bed and breakfast with tatami floor mats and sliding screen doors.

  • If you're into Japanese animation I would highly recommend this stop at the beginning of your visit to Tokyo. There is an audio tour in English too (which you don't get at the Ghibli) which provides i...  more »

  • Very informative and it's all for free! It's not quite big but more than sufficient. :)
  • I took a trip here because of my fondness for animation. I was kind of disappointed because it was very small scale. However, there is good English translation as well as a animation workshop where you can create your own things. Overall, this is a good place to take a kid, but for the average adult not so much.
  • The place is suitable for anime lovers. It is not crowded during the weekdays. This makes you to learn more in details from those who works in the museum
  • If you're a fan of Japanese animation and comics (manga), this is definitely a must-see if you ever go to Tokyo. The museum lends you a set of an interactive smart pen and headphones that works like a guided tour through the 2 floors of visual and interactive pieces in exhibition that tell the story of Japanese animation since old times until present days, shows the working desks of famous animators and teach through interaction how to make an animation, creatively mixing pencil, paper, cards, projection and other media. Really worth it!
  • Unexpected spot in the neighbourhood. Interesting static exhibits together with scheduled exhibiting animation. Maybe better for smaller children as a guided visit but for older children, there's a large library and multiple TV and DVD players setup for them to while away some time
