Original walls and a moat dating from the end of the 16th century surround Shizuoka castle, once an important feudal fortress from the Edo period. See the original gate and window-like holes used to place weapons. Inside the reconstructed castle, you can observe the model of the original structure and displays of the archeological artifacts related to the ruins. Take the English-language audio guide and roam freely through the minimalist rooms. Wrap up you visit with a hot beverage from the teahouse, located in the lush onsite garden. Where to stay in Shizuoka

The main set of accommodations in Shizuoka concentrates around the central train station. With some high-rise business hotels, traditional ryokans, and hostels to choose from, this conveniently located district offers options to suit a smorgasbord of tastes and budgets. Look along the coast to Yaizu for a group of accommodations with onsens close to the hot spring, where you can sample this quintessentially Japanese experience. Shimizu to the east has a number of grand hotels lining its waterfront, offering extensive views of the coast.

  • The castle was less than a mile from our hotel so made for a nice early morning walk but was most spectacular lit up at night.  more »
  • Left behind some walls and moat, the main thing about this place is the garden. Lots of school children around during my trip here, probably school field trips for them. A pretty good place to have a ...  more »
  • Not much left, basically a wall with a moat. The gardens are definitely the draw for this attraction. Very peaceful, nice place to take pictures. If you are short on time, this is not a must see.  more »
