Pay a visit to the historic, spiritual, and strikingly ornamental Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, a Shinto shrine located on a mountain. Particularly well known as the burial place of the first Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate--the last feudal Japanese military government--the shrine was founded in 1617. The main hall and area for offerings represent two of the most notable structures of the shrine, designated National Important Cultural Properties by the Japanese government. They feature ornate wood carvings, painted patterns over black lacquer, and gold leaf showing the colorful and vibrant style of the late Momoyama period. • Climb uneven stone steps to the coloured shrine. Then keep climbing up up up to the tomb at the very top. A peaceful resting place and worth over 200 big steps. Nice bronze & stone lanterns & pillars....  more

  • Not the most impressive Shrine in Japan, but certainly it has the prominence. Layed out in a series of levels, irregular stone steps - makes visiting for some a bit difficult. Crowded at the site and....  more

  • A really fun experience to take the ropeway over. Although cloudy when I visited, it still had great views of the ocean.
  • Amazing architecture! Such deep history and cultural treasure. Breathtakingly beautiful view from the ropeway en route to the shrine!
  • A popular shrine in Shizuoka, it is a respectful shrine, you can feel the peaceful of the place and a view of the sea is also nice. There are two ways how to reach this shrine, by ropeway or by car. I love this place 😍
  • 久能山東照宮神社 Stopping in Shimizu during our Japan cruise, Kunōzan Tōshōgu Shrine was on the top list of must visit place. We were not disappointed. With the limited time we had, we took a train to Shizuoka station, and bus directly to the ropeway station on the bottom of Kunōzan ( a direct bus from the Shimizu station to the Kunōzan is also available, but rather infrequent) . However, on the second visit last year we decided to take taxi directly from a same cruise terminal, and saved lots of time.
  • It resembles the Nikko toshogu. A little bit small in its scale, but still magnificent.
