Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, Shizuoka
(4.2/5 based on 300+ reviews on the web)
Pay a visit to the historic, spiritual, and strikingly ornamental Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, a Shinto shrine located on a mountain. Particularly well known as the burial place of the first Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate--the last feudal Japanese military government--the shrine was founded in 1617. The main hall and area for offerings represent two of the most notable structures of the shrine, designated National Important Cultural Properties by the Japanese government. They feature ornate wood carvings, painted patterns over black lacquer, and gold leaf showing the colorful and vibrant style of the late Momoyama period.
