Religious Site Tourist Spot
Pay a visit to the historic, spiritual, and strikingly ornamental Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, a Shinto shrine located on a mountain. Particularly well known as the burial place of the first Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate--the last feudal Japanese military government--the shrine was founded in 1617. The main hall and area for offerings represent two of the most notable structures of the shrine, designated National Important Cultural Properties by the Japanese government. They feature ornate wood carvings, painted patterns over black lacquer, and gold leaf showing the colorful and vibrant style of the late Momoyama period. • This shrine is incredibly remote and high up in the mountains. The best way to get here is via the Nihondaira Ropeway. The site is over 400 years old and has been restored to its former beauty.  more »
