Historic Walking Area Landmark
The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go Traditional Houses in the Gassho Style offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of villagers occupying traditional wooden frame houses. These houses, built in the "gassho-zukuri" (prayer hands) style, are known for their steeply slanted roofs, which recall two hands joined in prayer. The homes are very large, built to house entire extended families and family businesses and to withstand the region's heavy snowfall in winter. Enter one or two of the designated open houses to see the layout and delicate decorations inside. Where to stay in Shirakawa-mura

Located to the south of the main tourist village, the accommodations of Shirakawa-mura primarily come in the form of the traditional sloped-roof farmhouses of the historic village. Converted into hotels and guesthouses, or newly built in the distinctive style so as to fit in, the accommodations serve a mixed clientele, with a choice of budget-friendly hostels and luxury "ryokan" (traditional guesthouses). The village of Hirase further to the south has a number of standard hotels and ryokan, as well as some seasonal camping options, linked up to the main tourist village by road.
