Take a trip to Shirakawago Gassho Zukuri Minkaen, an open-air museum with traditional farmhouses, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The iconic design of the wooden houses, said to resemble hands clasped together in prayer, developed so as to keep the snow off during the winter months. In a mountainous rural area where the design still dominates, the museum gives visitors the chance to see inside the farmhouses, as well as learning about traditional agricultural methods and the lifestyle of farmers and their families. Very scenic and lovely little village, by going into some of the houses, one can really feel and history and stories from all those generations that lived there. Good for photography. Dress warmly.
Definitely a sight to see. Just as the tour guide mention, you get the gist of most of the gassho house here. Most of which are accessible to public. The place where they sell ice cream and red bean soup has a old style fireplace. Smoky but a must see.
Worth going. 600yen. Jan 2019. So beautiful everywhere
Beautiful village, it seems some people still tend to the houses and if you are lucky you will be able to see the traditional woodwork process in one of the houses.
Less crowded part of the area with a nice display if the different houses.
