Gassho Zukuri Minka-en, Shirakawa-mura

(4.4/5 based on 280+ reviews on the web)
Take a trip to Gassho Zukuri Minka-en, an open-air museum with traditional farmhouses, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The iconic design of the wooden houses, said to resemble hands clasped together in prayer, developed so as to keep the snow off during the winter months. In a mountainous rural area where the design still dominates, the museum gives visitors the chance to see inside the farmhouses, as well as learning about traditional agricultural methods and the lifestyle of farmers and their families. Put Gassho Zukuri Minka-en at the forefront of your travel plans using our Shirakawa-mura trip itinerary builder.

  • We were pleasantly surprised by how much snow was still present. This little gem of a " hideaway" is definitely worth our detour to Takayama. ( we were based in Nagoya) We took the Noshi Bus Tour in t...  more »
  • Must place to go when you in japan. The scenery is amazing. The gassho house is authentic and unique. The oldest village in japan and listed under unesco. It's take 1hour from takayama. I recommend yo...  more »
  • Lined with houses were moved from the village shrine and Temple. Put in the a-frame house, spectacular exhibits of old a valuable life tool. Where they're paid so slowly seen not crowded. Went to the snow season, the toilet had a heating throughout.

  • Open air museum which is missed by many. It allows you to look around many different houses and has a very nice slow paced atmosphere, which you won't find in the town on a busy day. Entrance fee but certainly worth it.
  • A MUST if you are here to visit the village! Beautiful sakura trees flanking the thatched-roof house museum with a back-drop of a fabulous waterfall! Interior of the museum is very interesting complete with samples of tools, etc.
  • Pretty and interesting. Not entirely necessary to get the shirakawa experience, but it's relatively inexpensive.
  • Model village with 20+ Gassho Zukuri houses set up inside of it. The houses were relocated from neighboring villages, being a variety of ages. Several are important structures which is why they were preserved. Many burned down 100 years ago, so we're reconstructed to varying degrees. There is good signage in English, Japanese and booklets with more information. The entrance fee is 600Y, which does not make it expensive. Tour groups do not come here so you will avoid the throngs of tourists as you see in the rest of the village.
  • Beautiful place and probably the open air museum is not as crowded as the rest of the village.
