Shirahama Beach, Shirahama-cho

(4.4/5 based on 460+ reviews on the web)
With snow-white sands imported from Australia and two of the oldest hot springs in Japan, Shirahama Beach remains a major attraction in a popular seaside resort. The town began importing sand from Australia in 1989, as the area's coastline began to erode. Today, you can take a stroll along 640 m (2,099 ft) of sweeping soft sand, stopping at two hot springs. The beach can get very busy, so arrive early to get a good spot. For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Shirahama-cho holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Shirahama Beach and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • The beach is very clean, with white and find sand. This place is ideal for having relaxing walks, or to watch the sunrise/ sunset. There are a number of dining options around the beach too.  more »

  • Best beach in the Kansai area; just a few hours by bus from Osaka/Kyoto and you're transported to a tropical climate with clear blue water and white sand. Enjoy the beach in the afternoon, walk over and see the sights/sunset at Senjojiki/Sandanbeki or Engetsuto island. Finish off the night chilling on the beach playing with fireworks. Check the weather/waves before you go though; they get pretty powerful and they will prevent people from entering the water as a result. To be fair, they do have a valid point - we snuck off to another beach and entered the water only to realize that the rip currents were really dangerous.
  • Really nice town beach. Sand imported from Australia. Nevertheless nice swimming.
  • A clean beach with fine sand. Breath taking sunset view. Well equipped tourist facilities.
  • Large beach with strong waves. On the beach has a free changing room, free shower, lockers are a little expensive for the size. Although has a lifeguard tower, was without staff on a very busy day. Signs clearly forbid smoking and throwing trash on the beach, yet many still do as complete lack of authority to enforce the rules.
  • One of the better beaches I've been to on Honshu. Well developed and with a beautiful scenery/surrounding.
