Shiojiri is a city located in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Its name literally means "the end of salt" or "salt butt".As of February 1, 2006, the city has an estimated population of 68,231 and a population density of 235.17 persons per km². The total area is 290.18 km².HistoryMunicipal Area Changes April 1, 1927 - The village of Shiojiri was elevated to town status. April 1, 1959 - The city was founded when the town of Shiojiri absorbed the villages of Kataoka, Hirooka, Souga and Chikumazi. April 1, 1960 - The city lost Kitauchida hamlet (of the Kataoka ward) to the city of Matsumoto. April 1, 1961 - The city lost Gakenoyu hamlet (of the Kataoka ward) to the city of Matsumoto. June 28, 1961 - The city absorbed the village of Seba. May 1, 1968 - Nishichikuma District changed their name to Kiso District. April 1, 1982 - The city surrendered parts of Seba (eastside of airport) to the city of Matsumoto.
