  • On the way to Kagurazaka is the Zenkokuji Temple. ILS it takes about 7 minutes to walk. Originally built in 1595, the temple is more than 400 years old. Throughout the era Meiji and Taisho, many literary artists walked by here (writers such as Ozaki Kouyou and Izumi Kyouka). In 1945, the temple was reduced to ashes when Tokyo was attacked in WW2. Six years later, it was rebuilt and restored. Originally from the India, 'Bishamonten' became an important figure in Japanese Buddhism. It has the function of protecting the places where Buddha taught, in addition to being one of the Japanese seven gods of fortune. What about going for a visit yourself? You can only get a bit of luck or fortune of his own! ☺

  • This temple is on the well-trodden tourist route in Tokyo and will give you exposure to Buddhism on a surface level. The main Shinto temple in Tokyo is far more spiritual and rustic.  more »
