The Hara Museum of Contemporary Art is one of the oldest contemporary art museums in Japan. The museum is in the Kita-Shinagawa district, in the Shinagawa area of Tokyo. The building was originally built as a private mansion designed by Jin Watanabe in 1938 for the grandfather of current museum president and international collector Toshio Hara. Designed in a Bauhaus style, it is a rare example of early Shōwa period architecture. Following the war, it was used by the US and then served as the Embassy of the Philippines and the Embassy of Sri Lanka. In 1979, it was converted to a museum. It underwent a major renovation in 2008, including a new lighting system designed by Shozo Toyohisa. Its permanent collection includes works by Karel Appel, Alexander Calder, Buckminster Fuller, Yves Klein, Yayoi Kusama, Surasi Kusolwong, Aiko Miyawaki, Yasumasa Morimura, Daisuke Nakayama, Maruyama Ōkyo, Jackson Pollock, Jean-Pierre Raynaud, George Rickey, Mark Rothko, Cindy Sherman, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Jason Teraoka, Zhou Tiehai, Lee U-Fan, Andy Warhol, and Miwa Yanagi.

  • very cool art museum in tokyo. the museum is a household building and art exhibits blend in well with the house. cool experience and worth the long walk from train station
  • nice and quite museum within in interesting building. Hosts nice rare paintings (e.g. Roy Lichtenstein, Rothko, Yves Klein) (at least when I was there in January 2018). Nice little cafe with also good meal and a nice view into the building's garden. about 15min walk from shinagawa station. Nearby is a big Marriot Tower with a nice garden (open to public). (4 out of 5: if you are on short term vacation in Tokyo, its maybe not the most important place to go to. But if you stay longer, I would recommend it.)
  • Totally useless website. Requires Flash to view. Tried to install but wouldn't work so I cannot even view the website. For a contemporary art museum, they need to get up to date by using modern web technologies. That means build a website WITHOUT Flash.
  • Why did it take me 17 years to finally go here? Well, it's a little out of the way and a bit of a walk from any station. But what a wonderful place! Just the right size for a museum and very relaxed. I joined a Japanese language tour but the website says English ones are available, but maybe check ahead because it was worth it to learn about the history of the Bauhaus-inspired building and the art on display. Then spent an hour and a half in the relaxing cafe where the food is pretty good and the guy in charge is The Boss. The only thing to be aware of is that no photography is allowed anywhere on the grounds, but I took some without knowing and it wasn't strictly enforced. Maybe just be careful and discrete.
  • Gorgeous modernist building and wonderful display in the 3 floors and the outdoor sculpture garden. Elizabeth Peyton show while I was there is great. And the small installations in some of the rooms are surprising and delightful. Highly recommended.
