Karato market, Shimonoseki

4.0
#2 of 57 in Things to do in Shimonoseki
Feel the energy and smell the fresh aromas of Karato market, one of the largest fish markets in the region. The two-floor facility includes a large number of stalls selling freshly caught seafood, and the rush of activity makes for an arresting sight. Head up to the second floor to find the main eateries, selling sashimi and cooked dishes. To catch the market in full swing, head down early in the morning when traders and restaurant buyers arrive to buy large amounts of fish and seafood to be prepared across the city. A little after 7 am, the vendors will have a bit more time to answer your questions and chat about the market. • As for me, I feel sightseeing for fresh seafood market is "a must". We buy Pufferfish cost JPY 1000 a dish and eat at 2/F. My kids don't like here for crowd with people and wet floor.  more »
  • A fully tourity spot with most of the food stalls trying to sell foods to the local and foreign visitors. Having said that, the foods are very fresh and reasonably priced. A lot of fun as one could tr...  more »
  • It was a Sunday and the market opened late at 08:00. My plan was quite packed that day so I arrived there sharp at 08:00. There were still some unoccupied spaces on the Ground level of the car park. A...  more »

  • Sushi are cheap here but the quality and freshness is not good. Rice seasoning is overly sour and the seafood lacks flavor
  • We ended up here by accident in the sense that I had heard of this place from students and one of my two visiting friends is a sushi chef from Europe who loves fugu. Well, it ended up as a delightful shinkansen trip from Hiroshima, nice and easy and not too expensive (about 6, 000 yen one way with no reservation) with the local sight and sounds being super fun. The restaraunts were gorgeous, bit we settled on a small kiosk-like shop which turned out to be amazibgly delicious. We had fun buying the fish and seafood. The prawns and oysters were super cheap! A great day out for anyone who likes to eat, especially seafood. 🌸
  • This is the very excited fish market in Japan, the Toro Sushi is really yummy, and very fresh too!!! but please noted they will close around 15:30. Remember to go there earlier!!!~~
  • How fun to walk the market! Have your cash ready as it gets quite busy. This is where you can get the tasty poison fish fuku. There're beers too, so that's great. Come with your date! Bring your watercolors and sketchbook.
  • Worth visiting. Place famous for fugu
