Shimoda Aquarium, Shimoda

(3.8/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Centered around a floating facility harboring a 600-ton tank, Shimoda Aquarium boasts energetic dolphin and sea lion shows. The dome makes up the central point of a barricade in the bay, creating a performance arena and living space for the resident dolphins of the aquarium. Standing on the floating causeway, you'll witness these creatures and their trainers pulling off tricks and stunts. Other activities include dolphin petting, feeding, dolphin trainer workshops for kids, and opportunities for boating around their paddock. Back inside the main building, see over 200 species collected from the Izu as they swim inside the enormous water tank. • Station station walk 10 minutes by bus and 30 minutes. Utilizing the Bay Aquarium has good views. I enjoyed the dolphin show and seasonal events, each generation to go. I joined the fish lab tour (additional 500 yen) in a spring break Special Edition. Staff played around with fish not normally touch the Aquarium back yard too. I felt upon the 50th anniversary this year, has been supported by the local people.

  • During his stay in the Shimoda went. Compact, easy and fun shows, Dolphin is just around the corner to see a staff. The Aquarium's nostalgic feel. Calm became one of the favorite aquarium.

  • Or take this one adult per 2,000 yen at Shimoda is thought initially. However, dolphin, sea lion shows, seals show, fish feeding, such as doing something always is fun. Time went quite near Tokyo Aquarium do not show a jump I can't fly or to see all at the same time. Show is relatively simple, but is very expensive. Also alluded to seals, heterodontus, doctor fish. You could also not seen alive but was exhibited in many fish in the sea off the Izu, so eat well with sashimi or boiled fish to observe closely. Friends and even I think that facilities for a couple or a family.

  • This aquarium supports animal cruelty. Thers dolphins come from the Taiji slaughter cover where only the "pretty" dolphins are picked. The rest of the dolphins watch their families be slaughtered. Please don't support this aquarium.
  • An interesting aquarium taking the advantage of a natural gulf to create huge enclosures for dolphins. The animals seem happy and you can get very close to them. The dolphin show features an underwater dance with a trainer with small scuba diving gear. One of the best in the world. The seal show is good too. When I was there on June 2016, a dolphin mother was mourning for the death of her baby dolphin. She would just keep swimming with the swelling corpse, a pretty sad scene. The keeper hardly spoke English but he told me that the dolphin mother was already doing this for a few days. I was going to ask why not removing the corpse from the water but he did not understand. I guess it might be a humane thing to just let the mother to slowly accept her baby's death.
  • We had a blast here, the dolphin show was awesome and they have sea turtles right outside the entrance. It is directly connected to the ocean and they allow the sea life to roam free in the bay area. Zero guilt felt for these captive animals, they do a great job caring for them.
  • Animal rights and the individual needs of the species do not seem to be an issue at this aquarium. Animals are rather displayed like objects in a museum than living creatures in their natural habitat. Avoid this place if you love animals.
  • Loved this place. Especially the dolphin shows. Ticket sold at Izukyu-shimida station is cheaper. Amazing shows are scheduled to be watched one by one with short intervals for you to explorer the rest of the small aquarium. A large school of deep sea fish, several mantas and many other lovely marine creatures in a cylinder tank. Watching a diver feeding fish is quite exciting. No worries about the weather. You can watch the shows under roof even it was raining.
