Suntory Yamazaki Distillery, Shimamoto-cho

4.5
#1 of 18 in Breweries in Kinki
Learn about the history of and techniques employed at Suntory Yamazaki Distillery, Japan's first commercial distillery. Built in 1923 outside the country's former capital Kyoto, due to the favorable climate and access to clean water, the company went on to achieve the largest market share for a single malt whiskey in Japan. In the distillery's "whiskey library" displays 7,000 bottles of unblended malt whiskey. You can also take a tour around the distillery to see the processes in action. You'll have the opportunity to try whiskeys of 18, 21, 25, and 30-year vintage, and, of course, you'll also have the opportunity to purchase your favorites in the gift shop. • Because suddenly I realized but never participated in "factory" look, and good luck was free distillery tour (charges apply). I participated in one. In the morning on a weekday because, out of about 25 participants, people from foreign countries was half over. You can hear the description while the actually used by whisky production facilities. Also as mentioned above for the first time the factory using a huge and vast number of barrels, was overwhelming. I think whiskey was usually not only the knowledge of not drinking and watching the "IM", at one end of transition of Japanese whiskey and craftsmen was known. Country is tasting corner (charges apply) on the first floor of the facility in General hand enters the domestic brands of whiskey only newborn, as well as unblended whiskey complet, Yamazaki, hakushu, Symphony Orchestra of such Many whisky distillery can only be experienced there. I think that spot is worth anyone's not on whisky has a special interest.

  • Many times I go. Enjoy a blender of Yamazaki. Take it you like whiskey.

  • Book your tour before you plan your Japan trip. Managed to book the distillery tour after checking its website for vacant slots daily for a month! Took train from Nippombashi station to Oyamazaki. Tou...  more »

  • This place is incredible. An absolute must if you're in to whiskey, but still enjoyable if you're not. The tour is really interesting and completely immersive, you go right inside the distillery and one of the store rooms which smells like heaven. The only negative I have is that you can't buy and decent aged whisky any more (they only had distillers reserve when I was there), but you can try absolutely loads of amazing whiskey for super cheap in the bar, but it's cash only at the bar and there are no ATMs on site so make sure you fill your wallet before!
  • Questions to ask before buying whiskey at this distillery. 1. Is the whiskey you are buying aged? We found that all the whiskey we could buy was not aged. 2. Is the whiskey you are buying 100% Japanese? We found that the whiskey we were able to buy was possibly made from whiskies imported from outside Japan and blended.
  • Tip1: While it is true you need to make reservation months ahead, it is also true that such advance reservation may be cancelled nearer the date. Therefore keep checking the online reservation in the days leading up to your trip and you may just be able to snag a spot or two and get on to the tour -- I did the tour on a Tuesday and secured it the day before on a Monday morning. Tip2: Bring your own earphones if you don't want to hold the translator device up against your ear the entire tour. Tip3: Arrive 30-60 min before start of the tour to give yourself time to view the museum exhibits and the gift shop. Tip4: Bring cash for tour fee and additional tasting fee; only gift shop accepts credit cards. Tip5: Have some food before start of tour...you'll be getting 4 shots of whiskey as part of the tasting including in the tour and you don't want that on an empty stomach. The distillery doesn't sell food; just snacks from the gift shop. Enjoy what I believe is a very good value-for-money tour!
  • Great experience doing the whiskey tour. Directions from the train station at clear and well marked. A must do for the whiskey enthusiast.
  • The best price and experience money could buy. Definitely get the tour but they tend to reserve far out which has changed within a year. At least 3 months to get your desired time. Bring at least ¥10000 for the bar after the gift shop to purchase shots of your favorite and rare whiskys. The gift shop accept credit card but the bar does not. Hence the cash. Enjoy!
