Landmark Tourist Spot
Pay your respects to the deified Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken, at Meiji Jingu, a Shinto shrine surrounded by a forested area crisscrossed with peaceful walking paths. At the temple itself, visitors give offerings, buy amulets and charms, and reflect on and write out their wishes. Walk through the treasure house to see belongings of the emperor and empress, and visit the museum annex next door, which hosts temporary exhibitions. Note that photography is not permitted within the temple’s halls. Our Tokyo travel itinerary planner makes visiting Meiji Jingu and other Tokyo attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • The shrine is in the middle of a forest in Tokyo. It's a big area with some nice buildings totally a must see if you are in Tokyo.  more »
  • Meiji Jingu Shrine famous should not be missed. If visiting a Tokyo shrine because it's old and the area is covered with trees more than a hundred thousand trees. Experience nature of shade while walking into the shrine. In addition to this shrine to come for, then. Occasionally, we will also have the opportunity to see the ceremony of the Japan nationals too. To visit the shrine is very simple. The entrance to the shrine, next to the train station, Harajuku, walk out of the station turn right, walk straight and you will see the entrance to the entrance of the shrine Meiji Shrine (Meiji Jingu) there will be a wooden door with a large Torii.

  • It was a peaceful and beautiful place. The garden was the highlight for me (unfortunately it's the only place you have to pay money to enter: 500yen). The shrine itself would have been nice if it wasn't turned into a construction site during my visit. The shrine itself was covered in tarp, followed by loud construction noise. I'd say it's still worth a visit, even though, in my opinion, there are better gardens and shrines in Tokyo.
  • Beautiful and peaceful shinto shrine. The walk through the forest is a great way to get into the peaceful setting. The actual shrine is beautiful. A great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
  • Beautiful park and entrance to the Shinto shrine. There's also a garden that you can visit. A very nice stroll in the park. During cherry blossom season it's super super crowded. Feels like you're not in a city, very peaceful.
  • Beautiful gardens to explore a perfect get away from the busy city streets. Seeing the Iris garden and the water lilies were amazing. I visited in the late spring so they were in full bloom.
  • Magnificent shrine dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoten some years after their deaths. The forest is brilliant. Crowded but wonderful during festivals and New Year's Eve.

Where to stay in Tokyo

Tokyo abounds with excellent places to stay, from luxury affairs to humble budget-friendly lodgings. Its glittering skyscrapers house numerous international four- and five-star hotels, both in the populous cultural hotspots of Shinjuku and in the business centers of Akasaka and Shinbashi. Meanwhile, hostels catering to the shoestring traveler lie scattered throughout the city. For a memorable, distinctly Japanese experience, seek out a ryokan, a traditional bed and breakfast with tatami floor mats and sliding screen doors.
