Landmark Tourist Spot
Pay your respects to the deified Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken, at Meiji Jingu, a Shinto shrine surrounded by a forested area crisscrossed with peaceful walking paths. At the temple itself, visitors give offerings, buy amulets and charms, and reflect on and write out their wishes. Walk through the treasure house to see belongings of the emperor and empress, and visit the museum annex next door, which hosts temporary exhibitions. Note that photography is not permitted within the temple’s halls. Our Tokyo travel itinerary planner makes visiting Meiji Jingu and other Tokyo attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Beautiful park and entrance to the Shinto shrine. There's also a garden that you can visit. A very nice stroll in the park. During cherry blossom season it's super super crowded. Feels like you're not in a city, very peaceful.
  • Beautiful gardens to explore a perfect get away from the busy city streets. Seeing the Iris garden and the water lilies were amazing. I visited in the late spring so they were in full bloom.
  • My favorite shrine in Tokyo, and one of the constant and unchanging things in Tokyo’s landscape as I’ve visited over the last decade. It’s especially good to visit if you’re suffering from burnout or are tired of the city. If you go early in the morning or on a rainy day, there are fewer people and the forest is misty and beautiful. Currently the shrine itself is currently undergoing renovation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, so check online to see when you’ll be able to actually see it.
  • It's a huge shrine. You must pay attention to what the locals do and read the sign's (in English). You're supposed to wash your hands and rinse your mouth from a designated fountain before entering the actual temple gates, and you are meant to bow at the large wooden gate too before entering. When people prayer they clapped their hands two times. It was fascinating. Bring insect repellant!
  • Very big Shito Shrine. Good place for a long walk while enjoying the green forest atmosphere within the busy city. Often have a chance to observe the Japanese traditional wedding ceremonies here.
