Meiji Jingu, Shibuya

(4.6/5 based on 5,000+ reviews on the web)
Pay your respects to the deified Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken, at Meiji Jingu, a Shinto shrine surrounded by a forested area crisscrossed with peaceful walking paths. At the temple itself, visitors give offerings, buy amulets and charms, and reflect on and write out their wishes. Walk through the treasure house to see belongings of the emperor and empress, and visit the museum annex next door, which hosts temporary exhibitions. Note that photography is not permitted within the temple’s halls. Our Tokyo travel itinerary planner makes visiting Meiji Jingu and other Tokyo attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Be sure to visit! Crazy energy, saved the trees and temples, time froze. Island of antiquity in central Tokyo!

  • A lovely place to visit, beautifully kept as everything appears to be in Tokyo. Sake barrels interesting on walk in and large Toji impressive. No Sakura trees here if that is what you are expecting. U...  more »

  • Go to this place via Harajuku Station since this station is near the shrine. Otherwise, if you go here from Yogogi Station then expect to walk like 12-13minutes before you reached the main shrine! My boyfriend and I went to this place from Yoyogi Station so the main path to go to the main shrine is extra long but we enjoyed it a lot as we were the only ones walking there at that time! The trees at the side of the path were covered with fogs since it just rained, so the place became more scenic and serene. The main shrine is very gorgeous but some part of it is currently under construction. Check this place out when you visit Tokyo!
  • Well known shrine in the middle of Tokyo. The entrance is very impressing, it's like you walking in the forest when just across the street it's the very crowded shopping district. This place is quite famous for traditional Japanese wedding ceremony. We found at least 3 couple when we visit the shrine. Really worth a visit.
  • It is about 1 minute walk from JR Harajuku Station.  I recommend to go there early in the morning because a lot of tourists going there later the day and well... if you want to take a photo of this place, just go early! It is better, IMO.
  • Very beautiful place almost magical, definitely one of my favourite places in Tokyo. I had chance to see a traditional wedding, it was gorgeous. One must remember that it is a place of cult and behave respectfully. There is a little bit of walk if you want to get there, but its definitely worth it.
  • Worth visiting if youre walking from shibuya/harajuku to shinjuku or if you only visit tokyo. If youre going elsewhere in japan (e.g. kyoto) then you can skip it.
