Cape Kamui, Shakotan-cho

4.7
#1 of 10 in Things to do in Shakotan-gun
Observe nature’s sculptures at their best from Cape Kamui a 100-200 m (328-656 ft) high coastal terrace spearheading into the ocean on Hokkaido’s Shakotan Peninsula. Strange vertical limestone formations springing from the azure sea reward hikers, after a 25-minute scenic walk on planks to reach the cape. The short, hilly trek through a maze of well-maintained trails, with many wooden observation decks, provides gorgeous scenery and excellent photo opportunities. You can also see the remnants of a World War II communication bunker tower en route. When you arrive, try dried scallops and other shellfish in the shop on the cape, which sits a 90-minute drive from Sapporo. • GW went in 1-year-old child and wife. Arrival anyway strong wind and was so close even the rear hatch of the car without permission. Before heading to the Cape without dressing so you can dress coat in such children should be developed. On the day would not be recommended in physique and baby don't think by. Dapin's parking lot also needs attention it seems.

  • From reaches the Cape until it turned up in the rainy drizzle had stopped, so calm down, could enjoy the view. To the Cape down and takes about 20 minutes. And the old lighthouse keeper's life was harsh now, well maintained, but would my remarks. I think 10 minutes is worth climbing the scenery is amazing, so good luck.

  • This place is so geen On July. So natural. Let’s get a breath of fresh air here!!
  • I be there in mid April, beautiful, quiet but very cold with 4 degree
  • "THIS PLACE WORTH YOUR TIME" We rented a car in Otaru and drove to this place. It was quite a scenic drive along the coastline and no traffic at Shakotan area. Please note that the gps navigation screen in the rental is in Japanese but voice navigation can be set to English. We had the car rental company helped to set our destinations before we drove off. From the entrance to the viewing platform is about 15-20minutes walk and I must say it is the most thrilling walk in my life. The wind was so strong and please, please, please put on sun glasses if you are not wearing any glasses because you will have a hard time seeing with strong wind constantly blowing to your eyes. And of course, I don't need to say more on the view. It's stunning and you have see it with your own eyes. This place is the highlight of my Hokkaido trip.
  • Very beautiful waterfront. Definitely worth to visit again!
  • Beautiful place with plentiful carpark. Very big winds, access to the Shrine may be closed.
