Sendai Castle (Aoba Castle), Sendai

3.5
#1 of 110 in Things to do in Sendai
Historic Site Landmark
Visit the historic site of Sendai Castle (Aoba Castle), an Edo-period structure destroyed in World War II. Demolished during the 1945 bombing of Sendai by the United States, only the ruins of moss-covered stone walls remain on site. Visit the castle museum to see a model of what the building used to look like, inspect a reconstructed guard tower, and admire relics from the castle’s past. From the hilltop on which it stands, the castle and its grounds offer panoramic views of Sendai. Sendai Castle (Aoba Castle) is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Sendai Edition.

Where to stay in Sendai

In the city center of Sendai, you'll find a good range of budget and luxury accommodations to suit a range of tastes. From standard high-rise hotels to traditional "ryokan" (guesthouses), they sit pretty close to the main train station, forming clusters around the main public parks, commercial developments, and temples. The surrounding landscape features a number of "onsen" (traditional Japanese spas) located in clusters around hot springs. Take a look close at Mount Okura and Kamakurayama for some of the most concentrated patches of spa retreats.

  • The must-see destination in Sendai although I think the Sendai City Museum is a better place to spend time. The walk up to the castle from the museum, though short, is a fairly steep one so judge your...  more »
  • We first learned about the Sendai (Aoba) Castle complex at Sendai City Museum and then decided to walk up to the castle site. The distance is short, but it is a very steep route of about 800 meters (a...  more »

  • It's so sad to see the remains only, yet, wonderful statues and views of Sendai city can be enjoyed. There is a local market with souvenir and food.
  • Only the foundation remains of the castle but the view is specatcular and there's lots of interesting information. There's a museum by the gift shop which is quite small but interesting. You can reach the main gate with the Loople Sendai bus but it's a very nice walk up the hill from the Sendai city museum.
  • To enjoy the full experience of this place, you should take the walk from the Museum at the foot of the hill. The nature surrounding in spectacular.
  • Great views, nice hike up a great big hill. Go when the weather is clear
  • If you expected a building that resembles an actual japanese castle, you will be disappointed. It is a great walk up a hill with great views
