The is a museum located in the Sapporo Garden Park in Higashi-ku, Sapporo, Hokkaidō, Japan. Registered as one of the Hokkaidō Heritage sites in 2004, the museum is the only beer museum in Japan. The red-brick building was erected originally as a factory of the Sapporo Sugar Company in 1890, and later opened as a museum in July 1987. The building also houses the Sapporo Beer Garden in the south wing.HistoryThe history of the Sapporo Beer Museum dates back to Meiji period, when William Smith Clark, who visited Hokkaidō as an O-yatoi gaikokujin, started beer production, and the Hokkaidō Kaitaku-shi, the former government of Hokkaidō, established a number of breweries in Sapporo. William Clark was a president of the Massachusetts Agricultural College, which had one of the best techniques of beet production in the United States at that time, and he hoped to establish the beet cultivation in Hokkaidō during his stay. After Clark went back to the United States, the Kaitaku-shi began beet production in Nanae Village, where is currently a part of Hakodate. This was the first beet cultivation in Hokkaidō.In 1878, the Kaitaku-shi delegated beet cultivation to the Sapporo Agricultural College, the predecessor of the Hokkaidō University, and a Monbetsu Sugar Factory was built in 1879, where currently Date is located. The sugar factory was disposed to the private, and in 1888, the Sapporo Sugar Company was established with a sugar manufacturing factory in Naebo Village, which would have been Naebo area in Higashi-ku, Sapporo. The company was established as a manufacturer of beet sugar, and asked foreign engineers for advice. The factory building of the Sapporo Sugar Company later became the Sapporo Beer Museum and the Sapporo Beer Garden. The construction of the building was supervised by the government of Hokkaidō, and a Germany-based company the Sangerhausen.

  • Surprisingly deep free tour and delicious tastings - we didn't expect much but the free tour exhibits all have English translation cards next to them and teach you all about Hokkaido's development since the late 1800s. The tastings at the end cost ¥600 for a flight and come with light bar snacks. The line for the tickets machine can get quite long so set aside some time and send someone from your group to claim a table while waiting.
  • Probably some of the best beer I've ever had the chance to drink! I visited here in November so it was all lit up in preparation for Christmas. The building is beautiful and there are many great photo opportunities. Inside, you can take a short free tour, or a longer paid tour. After wandering through the small free exhibition, we got to the beer hall where you can sample various beers and have some small snacks. I must warn you that it can get extremely busy all of a sudden when the tour groups roll in! Also, it is not particularly cheap but the 3 beer set was the best value. Definitely try some Sapporo Classic! The gift shop was great for branded goods. You don't need to spend particularly long here- 30-45 minutes should do if you are taking the free route. There is a huge mall next door with an equally huge supermarket inside (stock up on some beers from there!!).
  • I think that if you like beer this place is definitely worth a visit. The museum is in a beautiful and huge red bricks building 15 minutes walking distance from Sapporo train station (or you can take a bus). The visit is free but they also offer a guided visit (can’t remember the price for this). The visit doesn’t take long and it tells you about the company history from 1850 when it was founded until nowadays. At the end there is a bar and with 700 yen you an taste three different Sapporo beers and enjoy a small snack. Next the the museum there is the Beer Garden with a restaurant offering all you can eat Gengis Khan. This is a typical dish from Hokkaido where you cook your own lamb meat and vegetables on a grill placed in the middle of the table. It was tasty, maybe a little more expensive compared to other options in the city, but I was an enjoyable experience.
  • A museum dedicated to show the history of Sapporo beer. Guided tour is available for additional fee but it is only available in Japanese. You can also buy Sapporo beer merchandise from the gift shop and try different Sapporo beer products at the end of the tour for extra fee. There is a huge plastic stand shaped like beer glass near the restroom on the first floor if you are looking for a place to take some fun pic. Several buses stop here, including the one that goes to the airport. Sapporo beer garden (or garten) is located right next to the museum if you are looking for a place to eat. It is a great place to check out if you are a huge fan of Sapporo beer. But otherwise, this place could be little boring.
  • The museum has a free exhibit alongside a premium exhibit (the price of which is less than ¥1,000, a pretty great deal), and the information is available in several languages, including English and Mandarin. The free exhibit is a bit short, but you get nearly the same experience, and the inclusion of a tap room at the end to try the beers is really cool! There are also some other buildings on the campus, such as a restaurant, that add to this as a cool tourist destination. If you're visiting Sapporo, it's worth a visit (also, the Kitakushi brew is delicious)!
