The is a museum located in the Sapporo Garden Park in Higashi-ku, Sapporo, Hokkaidō, Japan. Registered as one of the Hokkaidō Heritage sites in 2004, the museum is the only beer museum in Japan. The red-brick building was erected originally as a factory of the Sapporo Sugar Company in 1890, and later opened as a museum in July 1987. The building also houses the Sapporo Beer Garden in the south wing.HistoryThe history of the Sapporo Beer Museum dates back to Meiji period, when William Smith Clark, who visited Hokkaidō as an O-yatoi gaikokujin, started beer production, and the Hokkaidō Kaitaku-shi, the former government of Hokkaidō, established a number of breweries in Sapporo. William Clark was a president of the Massachusetts Agricultural College, which had one of the best techniques of beet production in the United States at that time, and he hoped to establish the beet cultivation in Hokkaidō during his stay. After Clark went back to the United States, the Kaitaku-shi began beet production in Nanae Village, where is currently a part of Hakodate. This was the first beet cultivation in Hokkaidō.In 1878, the Kaitaku-shi delegated beet cultivation to the Sapporo Agricultural College, the predecessor of the Hokkaidō University, and a Monbetsu Sugar Factory was built in 1879, where currently Date is located. The sugar factory was disposed to the private, and in 1888, the Sapporo Sugar Company was established with a sugar manufacturing factory in Naebo Village, which would have been Naebo area in Higashi-ku, Sapporo. The company was established as a manufacturer of beet sugar, and asked foreign engineers for advice. The factory building of the Sapporo Sugar Company later became the Sapporo Beer Museum and the Sapporo Beer Garden. The construction of the building was supervised by the government of Hokkaidō, and a Germany-based company the Sangerhausen.

  • We took the self-guided tour of the beer museum (you have to go upstairs; elevators available, if needed). There was a paid guided tour available with beer samples at the end of the tour. Our group wa...  more »
  • Along with his wife visited in say the only beer Museum in Japan. «Premium tour (500 yen)."call conducted two hours before we may be depending on the time and date, was OK. Not knowing the description of the entire Museum? s premium tour» guided tours including the tasting tour once in about 50 minutes, and do not visit at least twice (once by performing the entire Museum and for a long time and So why is tend to be hated visitors). Recommend "premium tours." people are interested in the beer is why can black label with two kinds of beer [reprint made Sapporo beer (restore the flavor's inception), tasting (each 240 ml, see attached photo). [Reprint of Sapporo breweries, tastings are touching the history of beer in the beer Museum, [reprint of Sapporo breweries, it produces isn't easy for the market are not freely around if not sold even after the tour such as the tasting value is (However May divide the various opinions, taste and aroma of a wide variety of beer on the market is different). Also on the first floor at the Museum Shop "Elvis Frost glass ¥ 750 tax" so pour buy and use at home is certainly cold drinks and clothes on Ebisu's black and Red Snapper emerge red souvenir is recommended (see attached photo).

  • Cool little museum, and nice small testing. They have to visit one free and one to pay (500yen) le free one is small and the is not really anything in English but the pictures are nice. If you are going for the paid tour, it comes with testing and a special testing that your can pay her on this tour. The testing is good and pretty affordable (600yen for 3x200ml). There is a limitation of 30 min in the sitting but if you go during the off time nobody really ask you to leave. It was a good experience recommended but do not go there with high expectations.
  • Free tour but it take like 10 minutes to breeze through. You can drink 3 different beer for 600yen and you have half hour in the tasting room. That was nice.
  • Admittedly, I came with high expectations. The free tour was a mere handful of photos and inscriptions, mostly in Japanese only. There were some old Sapporo adverts, which I thought were interesting because they depicted geishas drinking Sapporo, an interesting juxtaposition. I gave a negative review because the museum was quite sparse and there were no English translations. They also don't brew any beer here. Moreover, the tastings were nice and relatively cheap (price yen 600 for three, 200 ml drafts), but the tasting room had no electrical outlets and there was a thirty minute time limit on all tables. Felt a little commercial; I would just drink Sapporo in a park or bar somewhere else.
  • Worth a visit. The museum bit is fairly short but it's nice to have a look around. Trying the beer was nice and it was good to get a taster set to try the different beers. Would have been nicer to have more outside drinking areas though as most places there are restaurants apart from the bit attached to the museum which only let's you sit down for 30 minutes at a time.
  • This is a fun little museum about Sapporo brewing company history. This isn't a brewery, just a historical museum. Admission is free for the self guided tour or there's a premium tour you can pay for but it's only in Japanese. If you only speak English take the free self guided tour, most of the museum is in Japanese but a few parts are in English. At the end you can optional buy some beer from the company. Overall, it's fun if you like beer and historical museums.
