Located below the observatory is the Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium, a sports arena built for and used in the 1972 Winter Olympics. Thrilling ride up and down the cable to see and experience the great length and height of the ramp. Great melon ice cream at the observatory. Better take a taxi and let him wait for you for an hour...

Get close up to an Olympic ski jump (huge and steep) plus get great views of the Sapporo City area for a 600 Yen lift ticket. Free parking and a separate ski jump museum (extra entrance fee). For me the most exciting part is that a fair number of times that I've visited (about 40%) actual practice jumps happen, even in summer (think water ski, everything gets hosed down with enough water to slide). Pretty amazing to watch and if you are very lucky, you get to see some of Japan's top Olympic candidates practicing.
