Moerenuma Park, Sapporo

4.4
#4 of 72 in Parks in Sapporo
Stroll through the exquisitely designed and geometrically perfect grounds of Moerenuma Park. Converted from a waste treatment facility and designed by Japanese American artist Isamu Noguchi, the park represents a monumental feat of urban design and a fusion of nature and art. Take part in a plethora of activities in any season, such as visiting the Moere Beach--a small pond opened during the summer--or even try skiing across the snow-covered grounds during the winter. Kids will be able to let loose on the park playgrounds, and couples can opt for a romantic stroll along the 150 m (500 ft) canal. You can hire a bike to explore all the park's attractions, such as the panoramic views from the peak of Mt. more, or the iconic glass pyramid. • This is the land north of Isamu Noguchi's art park. Park to a sculpture with the concept embodied in the design of the playground is all is of Isamu Noguchi. Tourist is a park for the local does not come so much.

  • Anyway, it is a large park. Just walk the walk. Into a glass pyramid. Good practice of children's bicycles.

  • It's a beautiful park, but it is difficult to get to, and in my opinion, it isn't worth the effort for a tourist, particularly if you have limited time available. If you have a lot of time, for sure, ...  more »

  • I went in November. There's something quiet beautiful about this park, the design is not like any park I've been to before. I rode my bike in from central Sapporo, it took about an hour. It was a pretty easy ride, it was flat the whole way there. There's not much food options there, I would suggest buying some food beforehand and have a picnic there. The autumn foliage is spectacular.
  • A very nice park. You can rent a bicycle to ride around the park. There is a glass pyramid. A magnet for tourist. It used to be the wasted treatment site and was transformed to a park.
  • A park designed by Isamu Noguchi. There is a big fountain, and it blows water like a geyser. It is very impressive, so let's look at it once. Events are held at the pyramid made of glass. It is good to check the web page and then visit.
  • Very beautiful place that's definitely worth the trip! There isn't much buses that run by this area (nearest one is about 10 minutes away) so be careful not to get lost whilst searching for the entrance. If you're not much of an active person, be prepared to work on those thigh muscles because you're going to walking and climbing alot. The effort to reach the peaks of the hills are worth it though, that I can promise you, because the view at the top is absolutely spectacular. Out of all the parks I've visited in Sapporo, this one is definitely in my top 5. (Bonus: There's a bus that links Moerenuma Park to Satoland and Sapporo Beer Museum. Keep a lookout!)
  • I think as a local I would appreciate this place a bit more than I did as a tourist. It's not bad, just kind of lacking any "wow" factor. It's great if you're looking for some peace and solitude though. Feels a bit unmaintained as there's lots of places where grass grows through cracks and the concrete and paint has faded. There are so many ravens here I could have been convinced it's some sort of bird sanctuary. I was lucky enough to catch the sea fountain long 40 minute program which was neat. Bike rental is cheap and recommended.
