Maruyama Park, Sapporo

4.0
#9 of 72 in Parks in Sapporo
A big draw during hanami, the quiet city oasis of Maruyama Park boasts many cherry trees, blooming with color during the spring time. If you're exploring the area, the park makes a good place to stop and have a picnic away from the city bustle, and a peaceful stroll through the grounds reveals a duck pond and babbling streams. The star attraction of the park however, is the enormous weeping cherry tree, blooming spectacularly in spring, and illuminated after nightfall to striking effect. If visiting during the cherry blossom season, prepare for big crowds and high-spirited revelry deep into the night. Our Sapporo road trip website makes visiting Maruyama Park and other Sapporo attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Cherry season, there are a lot of people to have a picnic for cherry! There are also a number of mobile cars nearby can be purchased, very atmosphere, from the Hokkaido Palace is very close, you can go to see!

  • From subway Tozai line station 5 minute walk. Maruyama Zoo, Maruyama stadium is located inside the Park, adjacent to Hokkaido Jingu Shrine. Would probably normally tranquil park with GW during the blossom period, many people enjoyed a barbecue in the garden. It might be one of the events most cherry blossoms had fallen, but for Sapporo celebrating the arrival of spring.

  • A nice park that is especially crowded for hanami during cherry blossom time. It turns a bit into a party. There are vendors selling festival type food like takoyaki. It's a bit on the outskirts of do...  more »

  • Staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming ! The animals looked beautiful and healthy. But for an animal lover like me, it is a little saddening to see all the animals cooped up in a small enclosure. Perhaps it was due to it being Winter. Many of the animals were pacing around, alone in an enclosure and seemingly bored out of their minds. Despite all that, i would recommend visiting the zoo with your family. Great place for the family !
  • Great spot for a daytime stroll. Definitely worth making your way to the Hokkaido Shrine for a peek while you’re there
  • I have been in many parks in the world. Maruyama is one of the largest one. During the cherry blossom person, the park is packed with grilling people, who are tired of long winter and too much indoor/artificial light. It's a kind of escape into the nature, for a while. The park is lack of wild flowers, that why is missing probably some kind of freshness. Also the main problem is the large and aggressive crows, what are looking always for more food, even attacking weaker people, like women and children, trying to smuggle the bag with food from them. There are too many of them because the local government does not regulate their numbers, same as bears, who attack Hokkaido people in the upper mountain areas, but never in Maruyama park. Here are no bears, but so many crows. They are loud too, disturbing the enjoyment of being out in the park.
  • This is nice place if you are interested in animal and nature. Especially if you are here with children, you can get valuable time! Visiting Zoo cafe is recommended.
  • Great place for a quick walk with beautiful views of the park's forest and the city.
