  • Upon our visit the place was very quiet. Very little people. If you know Hokkaido history or am a history buff you will find this place very interesting. It is very nicely done.  more »
  • In the forest, dozens of buildings have been rebuilt or transported in this place on 54 acres. The historic village of Hokkaido is an open-air museum that will show you how to live the end of the 19th century or at the beginning of the 20 th century Japanese. Grouped into 4 themes (the city, fishing, agriculture and the mountain), the buildings rebuilt here (houses, places of craft, industrial production and services, not to mention administration: police, position...) are furnished or as ready for use. This is really interesting but too bad we should systematically be shoes to enter and see. It's painful, especially in winter. We could have done, inside every house or other building, a journey that would avoid having to do so. Well, it's a detail. When there is snow, it is enchanting, almost missing the home of Santa Claus but he is not Japanese... A small booklet of explanations is distributed at the entrance with translations according to your country of origin. There is even one for the french, that is to say! Really interesting to do!

  • We went by bus from Shin-Sapporo station. You know the history of development in Hokkaido, Japan. Was smaller than I thought, but enjoyed the retro streets at that time. Went on a weekday so I couldn't get on the horse-drawn carriage is regret.

  • A good little place to explore various styles of original Japanese and 'Western' Japanese housing. It's not mind blowing but we enjoyed the beautiful winter scenery that went with it. Get a Sapporo Select Course B ticket to access this, the museum and 1 other location of choosing from a small list (such as the TV Tower) for ¥1,350.
  • Authentic, tranquil, historic structures gathered in one beautiful setting.
  • Couldn't think of a better place to spend a blistery afternoon! Shortly after we arrived we were greeted by a friendly volunteer who was quick to offer us a free guided tour of the sprawling complex. The kind gesture really made our trip; the buildings came alive as their historical value was explained to us and the intense effort it took to reassemble all the buildings in a centralised location. It had the potential to feel like a tourist trap, but it really didn't. The boards and demonstrations were illustrative and informative, would definitely recommend!
  • Great place to know Japan historic places
  • Cute but a bit out of the way. You can print postcards on an old fashioned printing press.
