Historical Village of Hokkaido (Kaitaku-no Mura), Sapporo

4.2
Walk through the open air museum of Historical Village of Hokkaido (Kaitaku-no Mura) to see a range of historical eras brought to life. Divided into four different sections--a town, a fishing village, a farming village, and a mountain village--the museum collects 60 different buildings from across the region to show the developments in architecture and lifestyle that have occurred since the mid-19th century. Take the horse-drawn trolley down the main street, stopping off to explore the old stone and wood buildings, decked out with artifacts, tools, and art related to a given period and placed in situ. Historical Village of Hokkaido (Kaitaku-no Mura) is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Sapporo Edition.

  • The main is to build the old buildings here, but the time is empty, it looks dull. We expect to have a history of the introduction, but there is no, so generally

  • Went there at the end of March and it’s so beautiful!!! All buildings are covered by snow ❄️❄️ but some of them (mountain village and some farm village) can’t be accessed due to heavy snow. But still, totally worth it! Don’t miss the food at their restaurant. The ‘cheese potato ball’ is very very very nice!! It’s hard for me to find another tasty cheese potato like this one. Try their rice cake too!!
  • It's worth to visit in Winter since it is covered by snow that makes this place is so charming. Only 1 stop from JR Sapporo to JR Shin Sapporo and you take bus at JR to reach this place. I recommend you to spend half day at this place and back to Sapporo for shopping.
  • We enjoyed exploring historical buildings and their interesting stories. You can sample the best examples of historical architecture in Hokkaido. Kids learned how people lived in the past by walking on the floors and touching the tools.
  • A replica of an old village that is supposed to be the first settlement in Hokkaido from Honshu by Japanese. For those who are into learning history, this should be place to visit. The diorama though looks kind of old and without the guide explaining the story behind the building, it will be less exciting.
  • An amazing place to visit. Worth the trip. Well kept constructions from Hokkaido. Winter time looks beautiful!
