Former Hokkaido Government Office Building, Sapporo

(4/5 based on 1,300+ reviews on the web)
Featuring a red brick construction and central dome, Former Hokkaido Government Office Building remains one of the country's rare examples of Neo-Baroque architecture. The historic landmark boasts a distinctive appearance based on government buildings from the American state of Massachusetts. Built in 1888 and rebuilt in 1911, the structure features a colorful flower garden, arched windows, block rooftops, and multiple protruding chimneys. Head inside to check out a small museum on the second floor, home to a collection of artifacts and displays chronicling the history of the island and the city. Keep in mind that many of the exhibit descriptions inside the building do not have English translations. • This city is known as the land of powder snow! If you want to experience winter wonderland. This is the place you should go. Despite the coldness of the weather the people of Hokkaido will keep you warm with their kindness and hospitality. The old brick design of the building gives this city a colorful vibe
  • Can pass by quickly. Good for a very quick, 20 minute visit. Entry is free, and won't take too much time to visit. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit though. It just happened to be on the path we were on.
  • A spectacular building, beautiful in both summer and winter, and free to visit. A lovely insight into the old administration of Sapporo. I found visiting this much more rewarding than the clocktower.
  • Nice historical building with red bricks and a lot of display info inside the building. Admission free. Great garden outside.
  • All the history in place that they don't teach you in the USA is very interesting. I didn't know any of the history between Japan and Russia. So much history with good displays. Well done
