  • This was certainly one of the highlights of our 3 weeks in Japan. Taro is a fantastic teacher and his wife Yoshiko is super efficient. The course was a perfect balance between practical cooking and observation which enabled us to absorb all the information. We all learnt a lot about Japanese food and culture, and got to ask questions about the culture and history that we were all curious about. He is authentic, knowledgeable, thoughtful, and speaks great English. Last but not least, the food is delicious and Kobe beef was top grade. We are looking forward to trying the recipes when back in the UK. Highly recommend!
  • My favorite activity in all of Kyoto: Haru cooking class with Taro. He even accommodated my no-dairy diet and assured me it would be dairy free before i even confirmed my booking. He knows so much and was able to give such an amazing insight into Japanese culture and mindset. He has a unique perspective because he spent some time in the USA as a kid, and his dad told him to think for himself which is completely opposite of Japanese mindset. He can share the unique perspective of being open enough with us to share his true self and share about Japanese culture which most Japanese will not open up to you about. This was an amazing opportunity to meet with a real citizen of Kyoto in his home and meet his family and learn about true Kyoto living 😍😍 Taro taught us the difference between REAL Kobe certified beef and fake so i will know in the future. He taught us to eat it by warming each bite for a few seconds before placing it in your mouth and it quite literally MELTS in your mouth. I never knew meat could do that. He also taught us a lot about standard Japanese cuisine as well as their culture and answered our questions and asked about our culture as well. That was what made this class the best in my opinion. After spending most of our trip before this class, he was able to bring it full circle by explaining a lot of what we had seen and help us appreciate it all even more. The food of course was amazing and getting to taste Kobe beef ( and showing us certified proof ) was also amazing, but Taro himself brings a unique perspective and knowledge to the table that you will not find at any other cooking class. If you weighing your options for cooking classes in Japan, i cannot recommend him highly enough - you will not regret it. If you miss this class, you will be missing out on an incredible experience and eye opening perspective on Japanese culture. We spent 10 days and did MANY activities and tours- and after reflecting my husband and I agree that This Haru Cooking Class with Taro was our absolute favorite part of our ENTIRE trip. I truly hope you sign up for this amazing authentic experience as well!
  • We had the most incredible time with Taro and his family. He is so knowledgeable and a wonderful conversationalist. It was an opportunity for us to learn not only about Japanese cooking but about Japanese culture. Both the food and company were amazing! And that Kobe beef just melts in your mouth! This one of our favourite things we did in Japan! Highly recommend!!!
  • Had a great time learning some of the basics of Japanese home cooking. Taro is a great teacher who took the time to explain the various dishes as well as answer our questions about food, Japanese culture and much more. I would happily recommend if you have time in Kyoto.
  • What a great way to spend the afternoon in Kyoto. You will learn the fundamentals of Japanese cuisine in the most comfortable and welcoming setting. Food was delicious and fun to prepare. Taro, the instructor, knows his stuff, his knowledge is not limited to food and he is fluent in English. He is a genuinely passionate man and wants to make his Japan as accessible as possible for his guests. He strives to share his culture and learn about others. Overall, this was a fantastic experience and if I could give it more than 5 stars, I would!
