Trip Planner: Asia / Japan / Kanto / Tokyo Prefecture / Tokyo / Minato / Roppongi / The National Art Center, Tokyo
Art and architecture enthusiasts should not miss the chance to visit The National Art Center, Tokyo. The center, opened in 2007, is noted for being an empty museum, meaning it doesn’t feature a permanent collection. Admire the imposing modern building, designed by Kisho Kurokawa and boasting a striking wavy glass facade. Step inside to admire the interior of the building, view one of the popular temporary displays, or check out the gift shop, restaurant, and cafe. The National Art Center reviews
First time for me but this is very much worth a visit if you're stuck in Toyko on a rainy day with nothing to do. There is also a nice lunch that can be enjoyed on the top level. Enjoy.... Ps the art.... more »
There are no general art exhibitions. There are some paid special exhibitions. However, even if you don't go to the exhibition, the glass building is something to admire. I found the gift shops... more »
My husband and I really enjoy this museum. It has many galleries with individual exhibits. You usually need to buy a ticket for each exhibit, although sometimes an exhibit is free. Generally... more »
Low sunlight brightens atrium of three stories height. One of the guys who is intrigued by the thoughtful people comes in with a frustrated expression and carefully presses the shutter. The outfit does not reveal the architect (or student), but you can read from the picture of the relationship between buildings and people. The National Art Center is composed of masses of large scale cone and reverse cone and wraps around with a wavy glass facade. Behind the building you can see that Aoyama Park is connected to the natural context. I was wondering if the horizontal pair-glass of the facade had affected Apple's new building.
Great piece of architecture. Nice light all day long. Plenty of space to have peaceful rest and enjoy quite ok coffee.
Great space with a number of interesting temporary exhibitions. We went in January and the place was basically empty aside a few locals. Definitely worth a visit.
The Building utself is worth visiting if you are interested in Architecture. And it is easy walk from the station. Check the exhibitions online before you go, i gave it 3 stars because at the Time of my visit there were no exhibition of my interest.
The museum is one of the most beautiful ones I have ever visited and one of the places I would recommend to visit first. The museum provides room for exhibits mainly to less famous artists. Depending on which exhibitions one is able the attend, the artwork might be fantastic and close to the performance of more renowned artists. The pieces of art on display is very diverse and interesting, especially due to vast collection of different styles.
